Hi all, I am ready to apply for membership, but questioning whether it would be better to wait until Jan to pay affiliate fee for the year and then submit application. Will ACCA charge me on top of the affiliate fee or once paid will be valid for 2020 even if I become a member in Jan/Feb?

Failed 47 first time. Link theory was correct in my case. This was a though paper only managed to write around 80%. Question 2 threw me off and lost confidence.

Hi guys, it was very time pressured and didn’t manage to complete. Very disappointed about Q2 as I did expect more about loss relief within group and capital gains transfers with more emphasis on group structure . As we already had to deal with basis period in Question 1 it seemed a bit unfair to also have changing accounting period for Question 2. I struggled to remember all the rules as I spent so much time on other topics that did not appear in the exam. For the VAT question about legal services I believe the law firm is based outside of EU will charge VAT 15% local rate as they are VAT registered. This is classed as foreign Vat and it’s not possible to reclaim on UK VAT return. Unless an application is made to the tax authority in the foreign country this will be lost.

I agree that for question 1, in order to capture the key success factors, a free-style analysis is more suitable as PESTEL, 5 FORCES are purely to evaluate the environment, and this not enough to demonstrate why HiLite is doing so well , for example the industry article said about the luxury hotel chains that went out of business ( same country same conditions)
I did use the Porter Diamond for inspiration as I believe the country itself has a competitive advantage in tourism that contributed to success of Hi-Lite ( favorable factors very good infrastructure, tax rebates, educational programs in hospitality which results in high percentage of leisure travelers )
I think with the models sometimes you are limiting your options to discuss a topic, and lose the focus from the actual requirement.

I understand exactly how you feel, it seems that SBL examiners are very harsh in marking the paper. It’s really hard to know what they want and it looks like this exam will be very difficult to pass. We try to prepare and know all models and theories and in the actual exam almost nothing is featured. Then you are criticised for anything you attempted in your responses that doesn’t fit with the examiner’s view . I thought they are supposed to be open to different approaches not try to fit everyone under their own. Very disappointed after reading the report.
