Me again! Just a quick question, as the OBU submissions website is down so now I am having a last minute panic due to having extra time!
Where I have mentioned SWOT analysis and what it is, do I need to mention the person who created it? (Albert Humphrey) and PESTEL (Francis Aguilar) or is this not a requirement as the models have been developed further since their initial work?
Do I need to reference the pages of my SWOT analysis etc, when I have mentioned it in the ‘part 2: information gathering and techniques’ section of my report?
Thank you so much! Hopefully the submission website will be up and running again very soon so I can submit it all and forget about it for a few months!
October 12, 2018 at 1:15 pm #477536Also, the analysis that I have completed in the spreadsheet – how do I reference this in the RAP? Is this an appendix?
Thank you – I’ll leave you alone soon 😉
October 12, 2018 at 1:09 pm #477534Thank you Trephena. Where I have used charts to show results, should these go in the main body of the RAP, or in the appendices?
Is there a rough guide of how many references we should enter? I’m worried that I may not have cited enough resources and perhaps need to read more! (I could just be having a last minute panic! I’ll be so glad when this is all done!)
October 9, 2018 at 9:21 pm #476982Thank you Trephena. I still don’t feel anywhere near finished though! So the financial statements of the company that I’m using, do these go in the appendices? And do I need to reference which appendix number within the RAP where I have used the figures from the accounts?
I just feel like I’ve (hopefully) got my head around the project, but it’s all the presentation and referencing that I’m unsure of. I’ve sussed the Harvard Referencing System and anything cited is in my reference list.Bibliography of books/resources that I haven’t cited but used for background reading – do these go in a separate list in the reference list, or within part 1 of the RAP stating what books I have read?
Thank you so much for your help, I would be rather lost without Open Tuition and your guidance!
October 4, 2018 at 11:13 pm #476497Hi Trephena,
I’m getting there! 4 weeks to go! Just a few questions to help tidy it all up:
Do I need to include the financial statements of the organisation that I am researching as an attachment with my RAP or is this to go in the appendices? Also, where I have had internal information to analyse (new clients gained etc) do I need to attach these reports too?
I’ve noticed that I started referring to myself as ‘the author’ of the RAP, then later I use ‘I’ and ‘my’. How am I supposed to refer to myself in the report? Third person? I want to be consistent.
Many thanks!
June 5, 2018 at 2:27 pm #456378Thank you so much! That’s a huge weight off my mind.
I had planned my approach and had my first meeting with a mentor, then panicked when seeing others looking at PLCs and much larger businesses, thinking I’d have to start again….didn’t get much sleep last night!
Yes it’s the business that I work for, and my employer is willing to let me have as much information as needed (there are investment opportunities for me in the future, so it’s of added interest).
I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to research market share and segmentation as much with it being a small business, however 7Ps, SWOT, trend analysis over 10 years and external research on trends, research into digital marketing and of course costs vs income for each area of marketing is possible. Hopefully I will be able to make some recommendations at the end of the research project (which may benefit the company and other franchisees).
Would I need to include a copy of the financial statements to show where my figures came from?June 4, 2018 at 11:00 pm #456214Hi! This thread is fantastic. So much useful information, I’m so glad I found it before getting my teeth into the report.
My main concern is that I have chosen a small business….I was going to look into their strategy of targeting younger clients (an accountancy practice) in line with the digital future and with ‘making tax digital’ coming in, and I have access to data such as where the clients have come from (internet search/walk in/referral etc.) each month for the last 10 years, costs of marketing and turnover info, and reach reports from facebook campaigns etc. But! reading this thread makes me think this company is too small and perhaps I should look at a much larger business to research instead? Unfortunately November is my final submission period due to starting a family since finishing my ACCA exams 🙁 so I am under even more pressure to get it right first time. Due to my ACCA overall grades, if I score A,B or C I should get an upper second, so my aim is literally just to pass regardless of grade.
Any advice is welcome!

The text in Q1 was extreemly long … I was confused a little bit … but managed to attempt all the questions. In Q4 you should apply standard analysis of a case as it is written in Text Book Chapter 10 Summary. You could add that such stuff like AAA and Tucker`s 5Q could be used alternatively. What about family owned/managed systems? What did you write?
I agree! I think using AAA still makes you consider the ethical and prof concepts etc. and you still advise at the end.
Family co’s I wrote that there are sometimes minority shareholders who may be treated unfairly, also the family could take higher salries etc as no remuneration committee in place to protect minority. I meant to add that families don’t usually involve much corp gov as they run the business so don’t have to worry about shareholders interest as they are the shareholders too. but ran out of time 🙁

Question 4 – last part. I used the AAA framework to help Mr Shreen decide on a course of action. I am worried coz the question said ‘discuss’ and ‘advise’.Did anyone else answer question 4 ? The AAA model was just perfect for that scenario but im not sure thats what the examiner wanted ?? Help anyone ??
I used AAA model too. Phew, I was worried as it usually asks you to use a specific model. Do you think it was right to use AAA/ Tucker to advise and discuss the ethical issues in question 4d??
