I’ve come across many a question asking what the frequency of bank reconciliations carried out by a ‘large’ company must be. The possible answers go like:
A) Daily
B) Weekly
C) Fortnightly
D) Monthly
etcWhat I understand is that, huge company or not, the minimum frequency of carrying these recons out is simply – monthly. The bank statement is received monthly, so of course, theoretically, a reconciliation with the co.’s cashbook can only be done monthly, and no earlier.
The problem is that I’ve been told that the answer is ‘weekly’. Due to the huge number of cheques dealt in/out, standing orders etc. I get that. In this case, to reconcile monthly such an enormous number of cheques unpaid etc would be almost impossible/extremely troublesome.
But, again, my query stands – how can you actually reconcile weekly when you simply haven’t received the bank statement?
Am I missing something? Does the bank issue statements weekly too?

However, although the bank usually sends statements monthly, it is possible to get statements whenever required. Also, with internet banking it is possible to check any time you want.
