Okay first off.. I REALLY want to appreciate the effort you guys put into building this site and creating this facility and for such a big initiative, problems CAN exist.
Thing is, in every other video I read students complaining about videos crashing and all the answer we ever get from the admin is a blunt ‘lecture works fine, check your computer’.. well let me tell you.. I have an updated computer, updated drivers and codecs, streaming videos on any other site works perfectly for me, but when I’m streaming your videos, it gets insanely annoying sometimes. Often it crashes so frequently that it’ll only run 15 seconds and then stop, I literally have to restart the video and skip ahead TONS of times. The only video of yours that worked fine was the one in f7 that was uploaded on YouTube.
So all I’m trying to say is, maybe these do work fine at your end, but MOST of the students are facing troubles and yes it might be a headache for you to consider this problem, but if this service is actually provided to facilitate students, I believe you guys should look into alternatives for video upload, maybe YouTube itself?
Would really appreciate if this gets you guys to improve your video streaming facility.
Regards.May 7, 2012 at 5:39 am #97209@barzakh sorry you have problems, maybe the videos here are in higher definition – than youtube and that is why streaming does not work for you
but this is only my guess, sure you will see some comments from people for whom it does not work, but you do have to realize, that many many more people it does it does work, and they do not leave comments, over 50Gb of video data is streamed every day!
so believe me, it is frustrating for me also that you and some other students have problems,
but when one sees just the comment: “it does not work”
well, how can I help? on every page there is a link to check the support page for basic tips, and there are so many different pc set ups available, and many different reasons why it may not workfor you and other students with problems, I suggest you should contact someone like your ISP and ask them to check this or your pc for you
most videos now work even on an ipad/iphone and other non flash enabled devices, even on a slow 3G connection, so not sure, why it does not work for you
but you did not even mention what connection you have .. so if it is slower than 3g.. maybe this is the problem, .re uploading to youtube.. there are some comments that they can watch other videos but not those on youtube… so, you see, again, one never wins,
and No, we can’t upload all videos to youtube if we did,, we would shut down the site altogether,
videos are streamed not from our own servers, but from big international company, with servers in a few different places around the world.. so it’s the best as it can get, or as best as we can afford, I’m afraid..
May 7, 2012 at 9:24 am #97210🙂 i absolutely understand your frustration and the maintenance load would be ample upon you guys and hence I, and most others like me don’t comment about these problems under the videos (no matter how irritating), because we understand. But all I want to bring up is that if this problem is looked into further, this could easily give 30-35% rise in your daily visits and dedicated users.
I use 10mb dedicated internet connection and considering that in most countries average speed is 1-2mb and that is considered suffice for ALL kinds of browsing and streaming, I never even faced any hiccups with any other site. Also I believe the video ‘crashing’ might have something to do with stability of internal codecs/server since speed just ensures constant running of the video:) (and yes I have tried it on all common browsers). So if you do consider then maybe you guys should try some other server that commonly works for other sites? This would be a help to both, students and as a result you guys.
Also, I am not sure how these videos work on ipad/iphone, cause they don’t have flash and it doesnt work for me, if there is a way then do guide me since that would cause great ease.Again I mention that this is just a suggestion and an honest view, it is certainly not meant to be a pointless criticism cause I do appreciate all the work that’s been done here.
May 7, 2012 at 12:17 pm #97211Well, if you are on 10mb dedicated internet connection then, I really do not understand why you have problems,
Please contact your internet provider and see how the videos work for them,if I can watch / listen to OT lectures while walking, on my mobile phone with very slow 3G connection, then there must be something seriously wrong at your end if you cannot access them on your fast network
If you use Apple Safari browser – it natively supports Mp4 format, so no flash player is needed, (firefox does not support yet Mp4 playback, but it will soon, and new versions of IE should also play those videos without flash player,
while chrome does use flash to play themI am intrigued about your issues, did you try another PC on your home network, if they will play for you then.. ?
We have switched enough times our video hosting ways.. and there were always users who had some problems..
you can’t avoid that.. unfortunatelyMay 9, 2012 at 4:43 pm #97212Well the good news is, the last two videos I played worked flawless. I think they were in Firefox, though I’ve tried switching all around in chrome Firefox and IE before, and none of that helped. This time it went well though and it also worked on my iPhone.. So I’m just glad!
May 9, 2012 at 8:07 pm #97213glad it worked,
I’m afraid. but to me, it;s all mystery, why it does or does not work sometimes..May 28, 2012 at 12:25 pm #97214AnonymousInactive- Topics: 0
