Hi John
just a small question about exam technique. on this thread: https://opentuition.com/topic/discounts-received/ you mentioned that:
“Why on earth they have typed out a new trial balance I have no idea (because there is no need for it”
For the question in the thread, would not the way to work out the answer be to rewrite the list of balances given as a trial balance? Is there a shorter way?
Sorry for the amount of question I have asked recently and thank you.
Firstly, I was referring to the fact that the answer had typed out a new trial balance after the correction. All the question asked for was the correction – not for a new trial balance.
As far as the existing trial balance that was given in the question, it is a complete waste of time simply copying out the figures all over again – this would only be a two mark question and you are under time pressure anyway. All you need to do is add up the two columns and see what the difference is – you can do this from the figures in the question without writing them out all over again 🙂
oh i see. actually there is no trial balance in the original, just a straightforward one-column list, no t-account and no indication of what is a debit or credit account.
I have not seen the original question. However, even so you should not need to write it all out. It should become automatic as to which balances are debit and which balances are credit.
