@angryhamtaro: can you also send the past exams from 2003 to 2006 to my email ngosyvinh@gmail.com. Many thanks in advance.
August 19, 2012 at 4:16 pm #103778To @Susan and @ngosyvinh, P5 resources have been sent to you.
To make your P5 revision more fruitful and structured, make an index of all PYQ by topic. For example, under “Performance Pyramid” heading, which past year sittings were the model tested on? This would be more useful for you to drill down on questions of one topic.
If your approach is on time management, I suggest you can attempt to do the whole sitting strictly on a 15 minutes reading, 3 hours writing basis. If you’re not ready for the time pressure yet, you are right. Be careful from getting into the habit of “copying and not understanding”. Alex Watt commented in his report that students tried to answer their “own requirement” by regurgitating the answers they memorized, but not applying it to the context of the case. (This ain’t Shane Johnson’s exam no more… π )
To my friends who didn’t do well for P5, don’t feel sad. We do learn Kaizen or continuous improvement for a reason. Learning from mistakes and celebrate our new attempt to get World Prize in the next exam sitting should be our optimistic opportunity. While aiming for tops, it’d be easier to pass. (Ever heard we should aim for the moon, if we can’t, we land on the stars instead?)
As this is an anonymous forum, don’t be shy to share your reviews on what you could do differently from the June 2012 sitting and how we as old and new candidates can prepare ahead of the next Dec 2012 exam.
For starters, I should not skip on the new syllabus like MIRR in the BPP Text Book, because at the exam, I’ve forgotten about the formula. Better be reading the text book page by page then. π

@angrhamtaro thanks so much you’ve really made a difference in mw approach may you forward the past exams papers from 2002 for p5
August 21, 2012 at 1:41 pm #103783Dear Angryhamtaro, i’m undecided whether to do P5 or P6 next sem. Nevertheless, could you kindly forward the past exam papers from year 2002 for P5 to krd1970@hotmail.com?
Thanking you in advance.
August 21, 2012 at 3:45 pm #103784@njalale, thanks I do hope to see everyone pass a paper that was inherently viewed as difficult, but it can be made easy with the right study mentality and optimism. Btw, I need your email LOL
@kzzrd, forwarded the said resources to you. In terms of choosing a paper, I would recommend choosing the one that you have the most interest in. Don’t judge your worth against the world average pass rate, we’re so much better than mere statistics. πAugust 22, 2012 at 2:31 am #103785Exam Review Board Meeting Minutes for Paper P5:
Paper P5 was considered challenging but fair. It was felt that paper had clear scenarios and requirements, although it contained more technical and numerical requirements than in past sittings. There were concerns about the paper being time pressured, especially with Question 1, which was very detailed, but it was acknowledged that this question was set at the appropriate level. There were comments about some questions being difficult, but that the articles in Student Accountant helped.
Student feedback:
63% of candidates found the syllabus was covered well.
79% felt time pressured.
57% of candidates found the questions unclear.August 22, 2012 at 9:19 pm #103786Hey..
I will be attempting P5 for the 1st time and it would be really good if i am able to clear the exam on the first go. Considering i have P2 as well as P7 to tackle with them, i would need your help regarding thus:1. The Books ? You said BPP… How is Kaplan ??
2. Time Allocation ? I have been unable to decide how much i should give time to P5 considering the other 2 Heavy hitting papers i have.
3. Wise Man Tips ?? I have read them above but i am sure you would not mind repeating them ?? π
4. Can somebody please send me the papers from 2003 onwards ?Hope to hear your response soon !!
August 23, 2012 at 2:11 pm #103787Hello @shahaan,
1. I used BPP only. I’m not sure of Kaplan. BPP has lots of details which I like. Simplified information from Kaplan can be quite a risk since Paper P5 after all needs more creative thinking from your side.
2. Refer to this thread to which I posted my opinion on time and mark allocation.
3. To keep it short, refer to the Examiner’s Guidance, Examiner’s Report and Technical Articles. Always understand how the question requirement is phrased. Being a professional-level paper, while the question don’t directly tell you what to do or what model to apply, the case scenario would provide many hints on what you should do. Misunderstanding the requirements can cost you lots of easy marks.
Having industry-specific knowledge also helps. My approach – as I do each question on the Revision Kit, I would always ask myself ‘How can this model be used in other industries beyond this question?’ Google has been a great source for additional knowledge. I’ve also spend time in libraries reading books on ‘Balanced Scorecard’, ‘Six Sigma’, etc to research on application of these models.
For additional study tips and good study habit cultivation, you may refer to interviews from past OT Genius Hunt winners.

4. Pass me your email and check your inbox afterwards. π
