    Dear John sir,

This question might seem silly to you sir, but i think it’s important for me to ask it out. While calculating variances if we get an adverse variance then can we retain the negative sign as it is or use the absolute (abs()) function of excel to present the answer as a non-negative integer?

    Much appreciate your help!

Do make sure that you practice the specimen CBE exams on the ACCA website.

The reason is that the spreadsheet you get in the exam is not Excel. It is similar, but does not have all the formulae nor the same functions as Excel. It is a very basis spreadsheet and you should either show the negative sign, or better, type the letter (A) or (F) against the variance depending on whether it is adverse of favourable.

so could we like reverse the order of elements within the variance, instead of std. hrs for actual prodcution- actual hrs for production x std rate we reverse to have actual hrs of production first, just to get a positive integer when we know for a fact its adverse labor efficiency, then right beside it that it is adverse.

Or we would be thought of as not knowing the formula and lose marks for simply guessing

It really does not matter which way you show it in the exam 🙂
