We know a lot about the UoL MSc now but I have recently found that Aberdeen Business School RGU also offers MSc for qualified accountants such as ACCA in just 9 months part time!
Please check out the link, https://www.rgu.ac.uk/study/courses/564-msc-accounting-and-finance-professional-top-up
Is it even worth having an MSc or is it better to do an MBA instead? Any thoughts?

Just an add on, Oxford Brookes University(OBU- the same one from where ACCA studenst can get BSc Hons. in Applied Accounting) also provides both MSc and MBA which are specifically designed for ACCA members (for the MSc programme you don’t necessarily have to be a member, you can apply even after you are done with 3 Strategic Professional Papers)

Interesting question…well, I don’t think so there is an absolute answer for this…
It depends on one’s career goals and prospects. Also, what are their career/roles demands? At times you may not even need a Master’s degree. Like in the case of an auditor who wishes to establish a career in forensics and fraud. Doing MBA or MSc won’t help as much as doing the qualifications like CIA and CFE.
From what I know MBA graduates do get paid more than MSc ones. But if keep return on investment(salary) aside, there are surely other factors to set a comparison with, for instance,
– Focus or skills gained from doing that programme
– Requirement or eligibility criteria of the programme (eg. work experience. For MSc generally there is no work experience requirement but for MBA there is)
– Employment opportunities
– Fees. If the employer is paying, it not an issue but if someone has to bear the cost of the programme by themselves then surely they may need to make considerations. Usually, MBA programmes are more expensive than MSc ones and generally the difference is significant.
– Finally, what I believe is vital, personal preference and interest. Some people find doing something more interesting than the other. However, I know many people who don’t even go ahead for a Master’s degree, after completing ACCA they simply venture into other professional qualifications ( Fair enough if the annual membership subscription fees are covered under their employment benefits!)
June 15, 2019 at 11:07 am #520529On the contrary and this is specifically for the UoL MSc, I am not sure whether we can enrol for Ph.D. programmes with this master’s programme.
Because there are many people who get a Master’s degree so that they enroll for Ph.D. programmes which may be the start of a rewarding teaching or research career.
June 15, 2019 at 2:12 pm #520536Thanks jetavi, I am considering to do MBA in the future. I think Oxford Brookes Global MBA seems a good option.
In the meantime, I will either do the MSc with UoL or with RGU, I am currently registered for PG Cert pathway one, but since I am now an ACCA member, I am requesting to be transferred to MSc pathway 2. It does not seem to be a straightforward process with them cause I am not sure they are willing to transfer my balance to the new pathway.
If this is not possible, I would rather do the MSc in Accountancy and Finance with RGU Aberdeen Business School.
June 16, 2019 at 8:33 pm #520615You’re welcome eagledave. Seems like a wise plan!
Just get the application deadline checked for the Oxford Brookes Global MBA, they have not given the updated ones yet.
The discounted fees and how doing this will help meet the CPD requirements for ACCA members looks quite benefiting.@eagledave said:

Yes, I have heard from some students that their administration process is not very straightforward.
But I will surely request you, if possible and if you don’t mind, to please do post an update about this, whether such transfers are possible or not. Will surely benefit other students.
All the very best!

Glad to come across your post. May I ask why do you choose Aberdeen Business School RGU over the UoL MSc ?
I am planning to do the MSc in Jan. I am searching for resources and info on how did other students find it. I am ambitiously aiming to do it in 6 months. And thinking if that’s even possible. I did come across 1 person who said he managed to complete in 6 months.
Would really appreciate your help and guidance on this. Thanks
