Hi,
I’m working my way through Chapter 2 and I’m not so clear as to which cell/figure in the pro-forma income tax computation determines whether a taxpayer is basic rate, higher rate (or additional rate).
Say a taxpayer had the following:
N-S income – £32,500
Savings Income – £750
Dividend income – £750
TOTAL INCOME – £34,000Based on this, the taxpayer is in the higher rate band and will have a nil rate savings band of £500
But if the taxpayer had qualifying interest of say, £750 deducted, this would give the following:
N-S income (£32,500 – £750) – £31,750
Savings Income – £750
Dividend income – £750
NET INCOME – £33,250£33,250 puts the taxpayer into the basic rate band.
I’m wondering which figure establishes the income tax band, the cell showing total income (£34,000) or the cell showing total net income (£33,250).
Thanks in advance.
April 11, 2018 at 5:23 pm #446197The answer is neither. Neither of those determine income tax band. It is the TAXABLE INCOME that determines tax rate band.
To calculate taxable income, we have to deduct Personal Allowance of 11,500 from Net Income. This figure may vary depending upon circumstances, but will never be greater than 11,500. It is deducted in the same way as Qualifying Interest. So, in your example, the taxable income would be:Taxable N-savings Income = 31,750-11,500 = 20,250
Taxable Savings Income = 750
Taxable Dividend Invome = 750
Total Taxable Income = 21, 750April 11, 2018 at 7:24 pm #446214Darren, when you ask what determines the income tax band are you asking for this information in terms of determining what level of personal savings allowance applies,or has f6ali answered your question with his response?

mrjohnbain – I think that f6ali has answered my question.
f6ali – thanks.
It’s clear to me now.
Thanks for your help.
