sometimes, a question will give a cashflow figure from, lets say, “year 4 onwards” … in this case, it is easy to figure out that terminal value has to be computed.
i just did a valuation question, and did not calculate the TV.
is there any rule by which we know when to compute TVs?

I think you may be using the words terminal value wrongly.
We always calculate the present values!
