Hi everyone.
I have had a break and now planning to sit finals in June and Aug sittings.
I am a mature student (40+) and have always struggled to study effectively actually struggled with life!. I am very capable but it turns out I have ADHD which explains a lot.
Is there anyone out there who could offer any guidance with regards to the best study approach with ADHD?
Would be nice to share.

September 3, 2018 at 4:57 pm #471022Hi Ruth,
Sorry if this reply is a bit late!
I’ve just been diagnosed with ADHD and am part way through my ACCA studies but have really struggled with it. All makes sense now!
As it is all fairly new to me, I was wondering if you had found any good ways of studying over the last few months?
Many thanks,
Dan
September 3, 2018 at 5:34 pm #471058Hi Dan
Nice to find fellow ADHDer :).
I am sitting an exam tomorrow which i am having mixed feelings about. I cant believe how much it was a struggle for me before i was diagnosed and medicated. Its amazing that i actually got this far with it, but i am a stubborn old thing!
My life has completely changed, everything is clear now. Do you take meds? I do, and i am thrilled with them. I am thrilled with myself now.
Anyway, for study. This paper, i have been able to make sure i sleep, that made a massive difference.
Waking up and doing a couple of hours study before work was useful. Then doing say three hours a night in the week, that was a sometimes hard because i do get shattered.
Weekends for me were/are the best times. I wake as normal and really do spend all day at my books. I dont fidget, worry about sorting pages out, spend time hyper focused on silly things etc. Reading my text, and retaining it (generally) is much more notable now.
What i have been doing is an exam question/section at a time. First just going through my books and testing myself. Then checking that against the answer. I tend to do one section at a time, dont try to eat the whole cake so to speak. I know this sounds really basic, but i have just spent years getting stressed and derailing my progress because of my condition. It used to frustrate me when people stated the obvious, and saying that now, its all so obvious 🙂
How are you planning your study day just now? Which paper are you looking at?
Happy to chat 🙂
All the best
Ruth
February 7, 2019 at 9:03 am #504395Hi Dan & Ruth
This is a lot late but hope it reaches you. Firstly its nice to see fellow people with ADHD. People doesnt know or believe what a struggle this is. But to the point i hope both of you are continuing you ACCA journey even with ADHD.
I have become an affiliate in 2017. Believe me i know how tough it is for us but keep going.
For the the study methods that i used and found very helpful-1.I walked and read when reading cause i cant stay still
2. I watched a lot of video lectures but i broke each lecture up to 10 or 4 mins each for lack of concentration
3. I listened to music while doing math or writing. Sometimes i even put songs in the playlist just to calm down.
4. I studied in a room closed all human connection and distraction
5. Never have i studied for a long time always took a breather in between. 30 min study& took; 10 min Break& 30 min study
6. Made notes everywhere visible to remind whats important, What was really important.
7. Rarely did i sat and studied, I lay down when writing, I read while pacing, i wrote while standing. It didnt matter whatever helped i did.
8. Sleeping or taking a 30 min nap helped a lot to calm me down.
9. Rewarding myself with something also helped a lot.
10. Never have i or could i force myself if was in a hyperactive mode i did a lot that day , if i wasnt i couldnt. At the end this struggle is real i missed my 2 exams due to this. Not failed missed couldnt even attend. But also i have passed my last 3 exams in one go even with adhd. Hopefully this helps you or anyone who struggles with ADHD. Dont give up.
If ya have any queries feel free to sent and email to jamesshanonsarker@gmail.com. I will get back to ya as soon as i can. Thanks and all the best.
JamesFebruary 15, 2020 at 2:13 pm #561940Hi All,
I know it’s a bit late but I have always struggled with ADHD but I didn’t want to get it diagnosed as I was embarrassed and thought people will look down on me.
So now I’m ready to admit that I have it should I go to my GP and tell them or is there someone else I would need to see go get it diagnosed?
Thanks,
February 28, 2020 at 10:25 am #563420Hi Faisal,
Do NOT think of anybody else but yourself. This is your lifemand health and you must do everything to make things work for you. I don’t know where you live, just google the docs/therapists associated with Adhd and book an appointment with them as soon as possible.December 22, 2021 at 3:18 pm #644699Oh god,
I know this thread is like 2 years old almost, but its so nice to see others with ADHD too doing ACCA.I was diagnosed a few months ago
I failed my last 2 papers twice! due to lack of concentrations and any proper planning(PM,TX)
I did F1-3 in ease without much effort and thought i would be as good with F5 and 6…Not.Im ‘trying’ to do F4 now, I watched and read the kaplan study text last year but due to lockdowns and CBE center closures wasnt abe to do it.
Im trying to just go through Mr Mikes notes and watch lectures on the unclear bits, I cant for the love of it finish the Kaplan study kit.
I’m on meds too but still am yet to manage how i plan my day, so the meds help only to an extent.
If you guys are still here, I’d love to know how you guys are coping and if your able to give any tips for someone newly diagnosedJanuary 25, 2022 at 8:19 am #647412AnonymousInactive- Topics: 0
