Dear Mike
would you please advise if i only read BPP study text for the subjects which have not been covered by free notes, and then mainly focus on remaining subjects through free notes, it will be enough to pass the exam.
the main reason i am asking this question is that i found FREE Notes much more understandable as it has only highlighted the main issues, however there are too much details in BPP even for similar subjects and memorising of all details is so tough.
January 29, 2013 at 2:03 pm #114458Hi
Course notes, video lectures and past exam questions and answers. Ok, study text if you feel you need to get deeper into areas not covered by video lectures but, even then, you could get pretty much as much as you need from past exam questions

February 7, 2013 at 1:35 pm #114433Hmmm! That’s a problem, indeed. When I wrote the notes it was intended that they were to be used as course notes. If you listen to the audio / watch the video lectures you’ll see that I go through the notes using them as a basis for the lectures and talk around them and bring in examples which I’ve come across in my professional life ( and some I’ve come across in my non-professional life! )
The course notes take me three days to lecture and this is followed by 2 or three days of practicing past exam questions. In fact, we don’t practice them – we divide the number of marks by 2 and take that many minutes ( ie 5 minutes ) to PLAN what we would have written in a real exam situation. And that’s what I expect my students to do – PLAN their answers in the real exam before writing the “full answer”
I tend to agree with you – the study texts are over-whelming. I believe that some students do actually read those texts but I know that I would not be able to. It’s all a matter of individual personalities and my individual personality would never be able to persuade my alter ego to sit down and read right through those notes.
What IS invaluable is reading through a reputable revision kit ( or the past exams downloadable from the OT website )
That is an absolute MUST!!!! Your chances of success in F4 increases immeasurably the more times you can read through those past exam questions and answers.
So, to get back to your original question, yes, I’d read the text in so far as the lectures don’t cover a topic. But I would tend to rely on course notes and video lectures for the rest and rely HEAVILY on past exam questions and answers

February 7, 2013 at 1:35 pm #114449If it were me, I would read the course notes whilst following the audio / video lectures. I would read a study text for the few chapters not covered in the lectures and I would spend a majority of the time available to me going through past exam questions and answers from a reputable revision kit or downloadable from the ACCA website.
Personally, there is no way that I could excite myself / motivate myself enough to read a study text.
Past exam questions are an absolute MUST
