@adeel – you should defend yourself or use a friend or lawyer to do so as if you do nothing the UCM will only have the ACO evidence and are therefore likely to find against you. You will need to set out your evidence explaining exactly how you did your work. As you will have had some indication of the ACO claims you need to address those points by answering them and attempt to show they are unfounded. As I mentioned previously you would normally be provided with copies of documents and any witness statements that the ACO will be presenting as evidence a week or so before the actual hearing. Pay particular attention to all the details they give you about the hearing and if you cannot attend in person then make yourself and / or any legal representative you are using available by Skype.

@bilal123123 what might b wrong
March 25, 2015 at 12:21 pm #238746I have a question to ask. All students are using internet to get articles to help them write their project work. In a case where you omit to reference one or two ideas that you have picked on internet can you be granted a fail? I did my project alone but I am not sure if all the ideas I have a taken from the internet were referenced.
Thank you for your helpMarch 25, 2015 at 2:26 pm #238763@joanel – I understand from OBU that they are keen to distinguish between Type 1 and Type 2 plagiarism – see the FAQs on our homepage https://opentuition.com/obu
The general rules that a marker has explained to me is that if the marker/moderator thinks that there should have been more referencing but there was no intent to deceive by passing off work that is someone else’s as your own then what usually happens is a fail for Referencing. If the marker thinks the amount of unreferenced material used was excessive so that the lack of referencing went beyond a reasonable amount and they are not sure whether there was an intention to plagiarise then it is referred to the ACO. The ACO will investigate further if necessary. Once satisfied the ACO will then release the result. If the ACO thinks they need more information then they will contact all parties implicated to try to establish facts and they will only release the result when they are satisfied.
In the most extreme cases where the evidence indicates that the student has a serious case to answer as deception and/or fraud (submitting work that was predominantly written by someone else constitutes fraud under UK Law) is highly implicated, then the case is referred onwards to the University’s Misconduct Committee.
In terms of the ACO if you are asked, then co-operate – it is in your interest to do so.

April 10, 2015 at 9:43 am #240736My result was referred to the ACO and I have not heard anything from OBU since 25 March. Is there anyone who has received any emails regarding the matter?
Kindly share your experiences in this regard as they could be very useful.April 20, 2015 at 1:27 pm #241913@trephena Hi, my result was referred to the ACO and it’s been almost a month since then that I haven’t been contacted. Just wondering is it something to be worried about or is it a normal duration for such a case? your help would be highly appreciated.

Hi Trephena,
I am a returning student from period 29 and my RAP went to ACO and i was awarded a zero grade atlast and was told to take another topic and another case study.
so Can i be awarded a higher grade than grade c?September 5, 2015 at 1:02 am #269882@chickcynthia – although you were given a zero grade I think you will find that this amounts to a failed first attempt and therefore you can never get a higher grade than a C. It will probably also mean that you now have only 2 more attempts left.
It may seem unfair but my understanding of this is that infringement of the University rules and misconduct have to be dealt with and discouraged and this is the reason behind the ACO handing down zero grades. The most serious or repeat cases go to the University’s Misconduct Committee and the penalties can be more severe.
September 23, 2015 at 11:34 am #273213My project has been referred to the Academic Conduct Office.

September 23, 2015 at 11:41 am #273214My project has been referred to the Academic Conduct Office.
kindly tell me what is the further process and how long will it take??
What can be possible reason of that?September 23, 2015 at 1:58 pm #273257hi its now that i just checked on the OBU site and to my surprise my project as been referred to the ACO…as far as my project is concerned i did it on my own..all my research work and my ideas..a friend of mine just passed the project on its 3rd attempt, his 1st attempt they got him on plagiarism and 2nd attempt due to a lack of referencing…now he just told me that once my project has been referred it means I WILL FAIL THERE IS NO WAY I WILL PASS..is there anyone whose project has been referred and at the end he pass??…..please clarify me…really stress right now..
September 23, 2015 at 3:50 pm #273286Hi Vinessen,
That’s actually not true. I’ve had a student who had her project referred to the ACO. She was cleared 3 weeks later, and was given an A.
Basically as long as you have referenced it correctly, and did not copy anything from previous projects, you will be just fine! It’s understandably a distressing period of time.

September 24, 2015 at 12:36 am #273336Hi Faisal,
Sorry to hear that. We have noticed that this is getting more common.
We have limited experience in dealing with this (we heavily emphasize to all students the importance of referencing and thankfully, it has worked so far) but here is what we can share.
Main reason for this referral
– A marker, with the aid of TurnItIn, has flagged your report for possible plagiarism.Possible outcomes
1) Academic Office does a check and finds that it is not serious. After communicating with you and hearing your side of the story, it then extends the benefit of the doubt and passes your report.2) Academic Office does a check and finds it serious. It then asks for a lengthy explanation from you to prove that the work is really yours and that there was no plagiarism. If they accept your explanation, fine and good. If they don’t, then be prepared for a failure and potential disciplinary action.
Suggestion: Do think back on your report writing and whether there were times when you took certain sentences from sources without referencing. If you did that, be upfront and honest with them. Its no use lying.
If you are confident you did not do the above, then just sit back and keep calm. There are quite a number of students who get cleared by the Academic Office and get passed.Wishing you all the best,
The Learning Luminarium Team
September 24, 2015 at 7:38 pm #273427Same with me, Really stressed out
September 25, 2015 at 9:03 am #273491Dear Saeeem and Sunny45,
There really is nothing you can do at the moment until the ACO gets in contact again. If your project is clear, you will have your grades awarded accordingly. If plagiarism has been detected, you may be required to submit your drafts and other documents to prove that the report has been done by you.
