Dear John,
Hello!
Today I attempted the MCQ of specimen paper of F5 (finished in 35 mins). I scored 30 (75% of marks available in MCQ Section) and I found that my recent performance in Section A (all are at first attempt) ranges 28-30 marks out of 40. On this occasion, I have three concerns:
1. How can I practise MCQ questions (you know they are tested across entire syllabus)? Should I practise them by theme e.g. costing systems, decision making etc or practise more mixed questions in the mock exams? Or alternatively, I should place more attention on Section B?
2. I made mistakes in Management Information Systems (Q2), Environmental Costs (Q6), Security of Info (Q17), Maximisation of contribution (Q18). Do you think my knowledge is weak to tackle MCQs? Do you have any further suggestions?
3. In question 18, suggested answer explains that contribution maximisation is based on the relevant cost (all variable costs) and the external purchasing price. However, when I tackle this question, I firstly calculated the difference between the all absorption cost and the external buying price, then decided which saves more. Is there any problem with my method?
Thanks a lot!
August 27, 2015 at 5:48 pm #268814Remember that you are aiming to get over 50% on Section A, and on every question in Section B. So getting 75% on Section A is fine, although obviously the more practice the better (especially since things always seem harder in the middle of the real exam!).
1 I assume that you have been using our free lectures and the lecture notes that go with them. In which case you will know that there are a few MCQ’s to practice at the end of each chapter.
In addition we have a Section A test where 20 questions are selected at random from a large bank of questions (so each time you attempt the test you are likely to get different questions). It is on a timer because speed is so vital.
For more practice you really should buy a Revision Kit from one of the ACCA approved publishers.2 I cannot comment on your knowledge. However it is unlikely that there will ever be more than 1 or 2 questions on each of Management information systems, environmental costs, and security of information.
3. What may help you with this (and with others) is to watch my lectures working through the specimen paper. How you do your workings is irrelevant – nobody looks at your workings for Section A. A computer marks your choices, so all that matters if that you make the correct choice. Obviously, however, the faster you do it the better.
You can find my lectures on the Specimen paper (and on the December 2014 paper) linked from the following page:August 27, 2015 at 5:51 pm #268815Thank you very much John!
