    “The audit fee and disruption of an audit are seen as too great a cost for any benefits the audit might bring to small businesses”
    I couldn’t understand the meaning of “disruption of an audit” in the above sentence..

    It means that the audit causes (potential) disruption to the business – e.g. every request for a specific document for inspection might require the accountant to find the relevant file for the auditor. In a small business, with very few accounts staff, little day-to-day accounting activity will get done while “the auditors are in”.
