Just to confirm, we are not entitled to bring any material into the exam? We are definitely required to memorise standards? I would assume so but my workplace colleagues seem convinced that we should be allowed to bring reference material.

ABSOLUTELY NO reference material is allowed in any ACCA examination. Taking any paper to your desk, however small, may be regarded as misconduct and treated accordingly.

There are no marks in SBR for “memorising” standards. At the strategic professional level you are expected to apply knowledge to the case scenario.
