Based on what you said, how does the external auditor audit the internal audit function to confirm / determine its reliability? Please be specific or give examples.
Obtain copies of their reports and review their work to assess professionalism, competence and thoroughness
Consider their qualifications, experience and history to assist in our assessment of apparent competence
Consider your assessment of their work last year and determine if there has been any change in number or identity of personnel
Determine in your own mind whether there are enough of them to be effective (too few could indicate the department being overwhelmed with work leading possibly to inefficiencies)
Look at their record of attendance at externally provided seminars to ensure that efforts are made to keep the internal audit personnel up to date
Determine whether management has taken the advice of the recommendations of the internal auditor and implemented those recommendations by amending / adapting the entity’s systems
