    Hi everyone

    So I failed my RAP Topic 8 and I’m having to do it again. The thing is my organisation has a YE 30 September and comparator 31 Dec. (The marker did not mention this as a problem). I used latest available (2012) when I submitted in period 27. However now I have latest available report of 2013 for my organisation but not for the comparator, adn there is no other comparator in the industry that I can use :/ What do you think I should do? Should I used the older ones still? I’d appreciate any help!

    Hi Natasja

    When resubmitting your Topic 8, use the latest available financial statements. That means use the new data for your chosen company and keep the comparator data the same as they don’t have the new data available yet.

    @Nada000 You need to use the latest financial statements available. Therefore if the results for 2013 are not published, then go for 2010 – 2012.

    The point of your research is to come with reasons for the company’s performance. Do your SWOT & PESTLE first and look for factors there when doing the financial analysis that may help account for the performance and refer to these factors in the financial analysis section when analysing figures. Try to back up all your statements with researched references. Just saying something has increased by x per cent and this might be because of such and such is likely to get you an F for evaluation and analysis as will comments that read like the notes to the accounts. You have to show you have bothered to investigate and are capable of analysing things for yourself as anyone can calculate a few ratios and read the accounts and say it might be due to this, that or the other. Look for artIicles in the business press and web to support your findings and give credence to the whole thing

    @Najasta
    There is certainly no point comparing focus comp 2013 with comparator comp 2012….your project will be badly limited to the point that quality may be impaired. You surely have to update where focus comp 2013 is available. Get comparator comp unaudited result or compilation of quarterly results or at worse forecast. If you can’t get this find industry ratios. If you can’t get this get another focus comp with comparator comp with updatex fs

    There are loads of articles on the web about Harvard referencing and OBU issues its own guidelines, so you shouldn’t need to see someone’s work to find out how to do it. As I have said in a post elsewhere: You need to show exactly what you are referencing in the text like this (Trephena, 2014) where you are using an external source (including the annual report) and if you are citing directly then use citation marks “like this” in addition, to show the words were originally someone else’s and not yours. Then all the sources should be listed in the Reference list using the Harvard system. If you don’t do this you are likely to fail on referencing as you will be judged to have used the ideas and work of others without acknowledging this and that becomes a plagiarism issue. Just doing a list is not sufficient, you’ve got to identify where you have used it in the RAP itself. The idea is that the anyone should be able to find the source – otherwise your referencing could fail for being inadequate.

    It is also better and much much easier to do the referencing as you go along – otherwise you forget what information you got from where. SalahUddin posted a link to a youtube video recently that shows how to do this in Word (think it was on one of the forum topics about failing)

    Finally remember all charts and tables should be referenced and all statements of fact, or opinions of others should be referenced. DO not use web addresses as references in the text – as an example use this format instead – (Trephena, 2014) in the text and Trephena, 2014 – https://opentuition.com/topic/re-submission-topic-8-updated-financial-statements/?bbp_reply_to=163564&_wpnonce=58078c9961#new-post accessed 29 March 2014, in the list.

    Moderator – as Gene has pointed out in another forum post – Johny is a spam bot and additionally infringes Forum Rule No. 1 No Spam / Advertising / Self-promote in the forums

    You need to act to block such posts as they are not in the spirit of genuinely helping students (with no intent to profit from such help).

    Anna

    Could I use a group as the organisation? Then I have the figures for both focus company and Comparator. The group is a group of companies all operating in the tourism industry.
    What I’m worried about is as follows: Should I use the updated statements for the focus company, then my title is going to read, an analysis of (…) from 30 September 2011 to 30 September 2013 while my benchmarking will be 2010-2012. What should I do according to you? I do not want to change companies as the rest of my project has passed, just this analysis part.
    Thank you

    @trephena and @Gene

    It’s only you two who can see the spambots, I can’t see any Johnny and Robert in any post 😀

    That’s because the forum moderator subsequently removed the spam bot posts but left our comments! Can’t think why moderator didn’ t remove our comments related to them too as this would have avoided the confusion 😀
