    Dear Mike,

Do we have to quote accounting and auditing standards when answering questions?

No, no and a thousand times NO! There are NO marks for quoting titles nor numbers of standards

    None

    Not a single one

However, by learning all the titles and numbers you will have achieved one thing …. you will have wasted a lot of effort and a lot of time … and all for NO return

    Hi Sir,

I would like to add then why in the model answers from the past exam questions they have quoted the number and same of the standards? This is confusing for me. If the model answers states the ISA\IAS numbers i thought we also have to write them in the exam answer?

    Please advise.

    Thanks

    That’s a fair question

They’re there in case you wanted to look them up for yourself but it cannot be acceptable that marks are given for a student’s ability to memorise information that, in a real life situation, could be looked up in a matter of seconds

I’m going to ask you to do a bit of research – it shouldn’t take you long

Check my responses on this forum to similar questions that I answered after the March and the June exam results

If you have attempted this paper “several times” then the obvious conclusion is that you are failing because of examination technique and not from some lack of knowledge

I wrote an exam technique article on this site some time ago – it’s still valid. Look in the P7 page menu under technical articles and you should find in there.

In addition there were two articles written by members of the P3 marking team but their comments apply equally to all the P level papers. Again, you’ll find those articles in the technical article section of the P7 pages

Towards the end of the P7 page there’s a heading ACCA Exam Technique and immediately below there’s the option to ‘Download ACCA Exam technique Article’

Do that, and read it! It’s a general article but is easily adapted to any of the ACCA exams

When you have read some of my earlier responses and the three articles that I have mentioned, if you feel that you need more, post again on this page and let’s see what your remaining problems are

Thank you for your prompt response and time Sir. I will go through the mentioned ones. I failed P7 last time with 48 and it’s really disappointing, so this time i will try harder to get through this paper.

    Hi Sir,

Do we have to use bullet points when answering P7 questions. I mean to say is it allowed to use in any part questions in P7?

No! This is a professional exam and the examiner wants to see that you can write proper sentences … the way that is expected of a professional!

    Hi Sir,

“As a general rule try to write three short sentences for each of the points referred to in your answer. The first sentence should identify the point; the second should explain the point and then the third should relate that point to the scenario.”

It is always advisable by the examiner/marker as instructed above. Do we have to strictly stick to this three sentence for each point method. I mean will the marker won’t mark if we write anything beyond three sentences.

Could you please explain to me how serious and important is following this three sentence for each point method.

“Do we have to strictly stick to this three sentence for each point method.”

No – you can do whatever you wish. It’s just that this is recommended by people with experience

“I mean will the marker won’t mark if we write anything beyond three sentences.”

The marker will mark everything that you write whether it be 3 sentences or 3 pages

“Could you please explain to me how serious and important is following this three sentence for each point method.”

It’s not important at all! It’s given as advice within the “Guide for reflection for retake students”

It’s not mandatory and you can do whatever you wish

“Will writing up to the fourth and fifth sentence be a problem in this case?

No problem at all … except you may well find yourself asking these same questions in 3 months’ time, and then again in 6 months’ time, again after 9 months and so on

What do you believe is the point of someone taking the trouble to write “Guide for reflection for retake students”?

Is it because it was raining one Sunday and they decided not to play golf but write something instead? “Oh! What to write? I know … I could write a piece called “Guide for reflection for retake students” just to pass the time. I know that students won’t pay any attention to the advice and will ask about the fourth, fifth and sixth sentences but it will pass a rainy Sunday afternoon”

Why would you want to write “the fourth and fifth sentence”? You’ve made the point. You’ve scored the mark. There are no more marks for further and deeper thoughts. Move on. It’s similar to the script that I marked where a student had written six and three quarters pages for an eleven mark question

You do what you want … and we’ll speak again!
