The maintenance department splits its time between Department 1&2 on a ratio of 2:3The question is what would be the overhead absorption rate in department 1?
The answer is 0.814 /machine hr

Have you watched our free lectures on overhead allocation, apportionment and absorption? (The lectures are a complete free course for Paper MA and cover everything needed to be able to pass the exam well!)
First you need to apportion the overheads between the three departments ( 1, 2 and maintenance) on the bases given in the question.
Then you need to re-apportion the total maintenance overheads between departments 1 and 2 as per the question (2/5 to department 1 and 3/5 to department 2).
Finally you need to divide the total overheads for department 1 by the number of machine hours (40,000).
I assume you are aware that although the exam can test you on everything in this question, you can no longer be asked a full question like this because the format of the exam has changed so much since 2002.
