    Hi there,

I’m getting muddled with how going concern affects audit reports and I was just wondering if someone could confirm my thoughts since the Kaplan Textbook isn’t particularly clear for the UK syllabus:

As far as my understand goes there are 5 scenarios relating to going concern:

    1. Company is a going concern
    2. Material uncertainty regarding going concern – properly disclosed
    3. Material uncertainty regarding going concern – not properly disclosed
    4. Company isn’t a going concern – accounts prepared on break-up basis
    5. Company isn’t a going concern – accounts prepared on going concern basis

As far as I’m aware these are the correct treatments for each scenario; please can someone confirm I’m right?

    1. Nothing to report in the ‘Conclusions relating to going concern’ paragraph
    2. Material uncertainty is mentioned in the ‘Conclusions relating to going concern’ paragraph – no effect on audit opinion
    3. Material uncertainty is mentioned in the ‘Conclusions relating to going concern’ paragraph – qualification of audit opinion
    4. Company isn’t a going concern is mentioned in the ‘Conclusions relating to going concern’ paragraph. Also mentioned in the ’emphasis of matter’ paragraph. No effect on audit opinion.
    5. Company isn’t a going concern is mentioned in the ‘Conclusions relating to going concern’ paragraph. Adverse audit opinion

    Thank you in advance

I suggest you read the OT notes which are clear on the matter:
    1. Unmodified opinion
    2. Material uncertainty related to going concern
3, Qualified opinion (lack of disclosure) – no MURCG as description on non-compliance will be in basis of opinion para
    4. EoM – no MURGC
    5. Adverse

Any “matter” appears in one place only – so cannot have murgc with anything else (as further explained in the notes).

“Conclusions related to going concern” is a new phrase proposed by ISA 570 (UK) ED March 2019 – this isn’t examinable as the cut-off date for exams from S19-J20 was 31 August 2018.
