Hi John, I hope you’re well.
I was hoping you could help me with a query.
I attempted the following question and have got it wrong. I have watched the lectures on Chapter 12 twice now and have also checked in the BPP study text, read the article on ACCA’s website relating to learning rates but I’m really struggling to understand how kaplan have worked out the following question.
The question is:
The times taken to produce each of the first 4 batches of a new product were as follows:
Batch number time taken
1 100 mins
2 70 mins
3 59 mins
4 55 mins
What was the rate of learning closest to? (1 d.p)the answer is 100r(^2) = (100+70+59+55)/4 and so r=84.3%
my solution included r to the power of 3, I cant see why its r to the power of 2 as there are 4 batches.
Thank you in advance,
BhavniAugust 4, 2020 at 5:24 pm #579252The learning rate applies every time the number of batches doubles.
So they start with 1 batch, this doubles up to 2 batches, and then doubles up to 4 batches.
So making four batches involves doubling 2 times, and therefore it is r^2.
(We can only use the doubling rule if it is 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on batches)

Have a good evening.
