Question
how do we know when to use the formula y=ax^b and how do we know that the situation is not doubling
Whenever the question has needed the formula, the examiner has given the value of b.
Otherwise it is just looking at the numbers involved – you can always use the formula but if it is 2,4,8 or 16 then it is obviously quicker to use the doubling rule.
