A critical success factor is what you must get right if the company is to succeed. A KPI is a measurement of how well the CSF is being achieved. A driver is the behaviour or effect which influences achievement of the CSF.

So, for an airline a CSF is keeping their planes in the air as long as possible (they only earn when carrying passengers). A KPI is the measurement of flying hours per day. A driver is turn-round time: if the plane has to stay on the tarmac 2 hours between flights then that’s not nearly as good as only spending 0.5 hours. So it will be important to realise that management of the driver influences the achievement of the CSF. Therefore turnround time becomes a KPI also.
