    Hey guys!

    I am new here, but have been going through the posts, and see quite a few people are confused over one aspect or the other on how to pursue the project. How about we have a general chat session to discuss it? I passed my OBU a couple of years ago, and would be happy to answer any questions on how to get started, meetings with the mentor etc.

    Note:
    I am not advertising any mentoring services. And I definitely don’t have any projects that I will be distributing. The purpose of the chat would be to create a knowledge sharing portal of sorts. All suggestions welcome!

    @kayfabuacca:
    Hi, ok, so I am guessing that you havent read the BSc Infopack, or have just skimmed through it. Either way, there is a section in it that provides guidance with regard to IT skills. Basically, graphs, charts etc are a way of demonstrating your IT skills, without which you are likely to fail the project. So attempt to incorporate those wherever possible. And since presentations are about presenting condensed information, charts is one of the most effective ways to do so.
    As far as your topic choice goes, it doesn’t matter if its banking, basic principle remains the same. Good luck!

    @mzhawydrake

    Hello, so this is another question which could be answered straight from the BSc Infopack. Basically, in order to get a 2.1 or higher, you need to maintain your average at 58% or above. Although do keep in mind that lower the percentage, the harder it is to earn a better class of degree, as the mechanics is two-fold: your average, as well as your grade on RAP. Good luck! (P.S. Infopack, page 15!)

    Hiya, so I think you are planning to for topic 8. I dont think I need to brush up on the concept of primary and secondary information here. There are many different sources where you can get information from; published financial statements, company websites, third party websites, newspapers, other publications…the resources are endless! You just need to dive in…Good luck!

    Guys, download the Infopack, I have added the link below:
    https://business.brookes.ac.uk/undergraduate/2014/acca/files/information-pack.pdf
    It is an excellent guide. Cheers!

    hi, I’m choosing Topic 6. I dont know how to get my RAP started. Is it the reference book published by BPP for thes OBU RAP useful? I intend to buy.
    Once I done my RAP, how could I check for plagiarism?

    @liewjf:

    Hello, I think I just answered your post…Start RAP by downloading the OBU Infopack (I put the link up on the previous post).

    Personally, I didnt use the BPP guide, having pursued topic 6 myself. OBU Infopack proved enough for me. It depends from person to person though…so if you feel you need additional guidance, or have heard positive reviews regarding the aforementioned publication, then think about it.

    Im pretty sure there are a few softwares that check for plagiarism. However, the way I avoided it was simple…I didnt leave referencing to the last minute. Often people do that…..they write up the whole project, and leave referencing as a separate task. I referenced my sources whenever they came up during writing the project.

    Good luck!

    Hello.
    I am looking forward to do OBU next year after completing ACCA level 2. However, the fees are quite high for it where I live and I don’t see the point since the mentor is abroad 75% of the time and I would meet him only once or twice. Can I do it alone?
    And try to find help online?

    i want to know how much referencing do we need to do ?
    i mean there are a lot of references in the whole project and doesn’t that go for the plagiarism?
    and i want to know about topic 8 that what if all our ratios don’t match with the co.? and do we really need to do paraphrasing?
    please i want the answers to these questions as i am really confused i have paid a mentor but hez not really helping out. he answers to my questions after a wekk or two and i dont know how wud i completet the work. 🙁 i am really worried

    @Celine COLIN
    Hi. I am uncertain whether you mean the mentor fee or the project submission fee. I will answer in terms of both.

    As far as the fee for project submission goes, that’s unavoidable. Not to mention it keeps rising every session. So I would suggest tackling it as soon as you are done with Level 2 (by which I assume you mean Fundamental Level).

    Secondly, as far as the mentor goes, he/she doesn’t have to be someone abroad. It could very well be your teacher, or your manager perhaps. If you go through the OBU Infopack, it lists some criteria as to who can act as your mentor. You can also find someone who can mentor you online, but I think your problem with face-to-face meeting would remain. As far as the mentoring fee goes, again, unavoidable.

    Thirdly, the meetings with the mentor. As per the Infopack, there should be a minimum of 3 meetings, which is something you will “document” within your SLS (Skills and Learning Statement). So, there is no way out of that either. Furthermore, notice I said “minimum” meetings. If you believe that you need more help, and your mentor is willing to give you more time, then you can have more meetings.

    Hope this helps!

    @afzal321:

    Hi,

    Look, I think you need to understand what referencing is all about. When you are writing a research paper or a project (as the case may be), you need to support you argument by citing different works, alright? See what the OBU Infopack has to say:

    “Whenever you produce academic work you will be asked to provide references for your ideas. You will find this easier to do if you understand why it is seen as so important in British universities. Referencing is essential to:
    1 Acknowledge other peoples’ ideas
    2 Allow the reader of your work to locate the cited references easily, and so evaluate your interpretation of those ideas
    3 Avoid plagiarism (i.e. taking other peoples’ thoughts, ideas or writings and using them as though they are your own)
    4 Show evidence of the breadth and depth of your reading
    5 Avoid losing marks! ”

    There is no exact answer with how much referencing you need to do. Just let point 4 above be your guiding light in this respect! As far as plagiarism goes, well, that’s why we use referencing, no? To avoid plagiarism?

    If your ratios dont match with the company ratios, it is possible they are are considering other items in their calculation. Go over your calculation carefully, and try finding out what you missed!

    I dont understand your question about paraphrasing….could you possibly rephrase that??

    As far as the issue with the mentor is concerned…I think you need to arrange face-to-face meetings with him. Like I mentioned in a post above, you need to have a minimum of 3 meetings with your mentor. Go fully prepped (take along a list of queries, your progress so far etc), and make the most out of the meetings. Furthermore, please read the OBU Infopack, it will clear much of the confusion you are facing now.

    No problem, happy to help! Good luck!

    hello totem,

    I’m on part 2 of my rap and a bit stuck on the information gathering. Is it all information on my case study based on my research objectives?

    @Agnes

    Hey there!

    Hmmmm, case study means project, right? 😉

    Generally speaking, yes, information gathered ought to conform with research objectives. See, we set research objectives so that we can define the boundries of our project. If you gather information that is not relevant to your research objective, its not really going to support your project, is it? If you feel that your research objectives are too narrow, or there is not enough information relating to them, then maybe you should consider redefining them.

    With regard to Part 2, it’s merely a writeup regarding the information you have gathered. See what the OBU Infopack has to say:

    “PART 2 – Information gathering and accounting / business techniques – 1,500 words

    The second part of your Research Report should provide more detail about (i) the information that you have gathered and (ii) the accounting and business techniques you have chosen to apply to this information. It should include the following:

    – The sources of information from which you have obtained relevant data
    – A description of the methods used to collect information, including online access
    – A discussion of the limitations of your information gathering
    – Identification of any ethical issues that arose during your information gathering and how they were resolved
    – An explanation of the accounting and / or business techniques you have used, including a discussion of their limitations.”

    I think the instructions are pretty clear! Let me know if you are still confused.

    Hope this helps!

    Why don’t you try researching a bit which models would be relevant and applicable to your chosen company and research questions?

    @hasanali95

    Hey there. I think this is something you can calculate even if not explicitly stated in the annual report in terms of units. Inventory movement can give you the items sold during the period. Opening inventory, closing inventory, movement in terms of purchases and returns (if any). Conversely, if you have the revenue streams by product, you can divide by the unit price and get the number of items sold per product. Go into the relevant notes to the accounts, it is quite possible they have stated their sales unit-wise, or give some information that might help you get what you need.

    Remember, just go through the financials thoroughly. You will get all that you need for your project in their. If not directly, then indirectly.

    Good luck!

    @Celine COLIN

    Hi, you have to pass F7, F8 and F9 prior to RAP submission. Again, quoting OBU Infopack:

    “To be awarded the BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting you must:
    1. Be eligible for the degree. This means you must be registered with Oxford Brookes University i.e. opted-in to the BSc degree scheme before passing any of the three ACCA Fundamentals papers, F7, F8 and F9
    2. Pass the three ACCA Fundamentals papers F7, F8 and F9 and pass other papers as required to successfully complete all nine Fundamentals level papers
    3. Complete the ACCA Professional Ethics module before submitting a Research and Analysis Project to Oxford Brookes University
    4. Complete and pass the Oxford Brookes University Research and Analysis Project.”

    Point 2 answers your question.

    @hasanali95:

    I believe you have to show the basis of calculation for all the figures that you quote.

    Piece of advice….if you are having trouble with the company you picked, I suggest you go with another one. Provided that the complications are nothing short of impossible to, well, uncomplicate (for the lack of a better word!). Because if you are not confident with the material you have to work with, any gaps in your project will show to the marker. They read thousands of projects, hence they can tell when a student is struggling.

    All the best.

    Hi Totem
    Thanks very much for this thread, this is extremely useful. My question relates to Part 2 in the research paper –
    “PART 2 – INFORMATION GATHERING AND ACCOUNTING / BUSINESS TECHNIQUES – 1,500 WORDS
    The second part of your Research Report should provide more detail about
    (i) the information that you have gathered and
    (ii) the accounting and business techniques you have chosen to apply to this information. It should include the following …”

    How many words would you suggest for part (i) and how many for (ii) please? I was thinking to do 500 for (i) and 1,000 for (ii) but not too sure. Also, in Part 2 the information which HAS been collected is discussed. Is that the case really or we need to discuss what we’d like to collect for the project?

    Thanks very much in advance!
    Marina
