Hello
I am finding it difficult to know when I should use the models shown below, specifically the first 2, since i’m guessing the 3rd would be for public sectors only, but then what if an entity is part of the public sector how would i know which of the 3 to use, can you please assist?
1. BCG matrix
2. Parenting portfolio matrix
3. Public sector portfolio matrix
I realised this when i was trying to answer December 2010 Q1C

BCG – you need to be told market share and market growth to use that and it deals with existing businesses and products how ‘good’ they are, and what should be done with them.
Parenting – really you are looking at the method of managing subsidiaries (here synergy management). Obviously specifically asked in (c) so there is not point in talking about it in (a)
Public – it is in the syllabus, but I have long stopped saying anything about it in lectures and it has never been asked as far as I recall.
By the way, I’m grateful for your inclusion of links to questions: makes it much easier for me.
well i’m sure you’re very busy as well, you’re welcome. Thanks
