I had a question in the exam which I found a bit ambiguous. They asked what part of the value chain the following would be part of:
“A restaurant recently provided Ipads to waiters so that they could take orders”
The answer I gave was inbound logistics as it is part of getting the order before the food is made (operations).
Do I have this wrong – Is it part of Operations or is it part of the secondary/support activity called Technology?
I find these types of questions very frustrating as I could argue the point in many ways and that CIMA tries to catch you out – very frustrated.
Inbound logistics is the physical movememt of raw material from supplier to operations, perhaps going through raw material inventory.
Operations could be,correct,as these devices are, used on a day-to-day basis for carrying out the restauramt’s operations. However, I also see a case for technology developmemt. The point about support activities is that thwy impinge on primary activities, so the iPads are technology, but used in operations.
On balance I would go for TD.
I agree with your frustrations and think the OT questions can often be,answered correctly in more, than one way.
Thanks Ken for your valuable feedback.
I have encountered many such subjective/ambiguous questions in these OT exams. I hope they improve them in the future.
Kind regards
Karl
