Dear Sir,
I would like to know the meaning of “management by walking around” by Peters and Waterman. Please explain with some examples.
Thanks in advance.
Some managers tend to stay in their offices dealing with formal reports and communication. It is argued that the information they receive is therefore limited and that they have little direct contact with staff.
MBWA means getting out of the office and literally walking amongst staff. This allows managers to see for themselves what’s going on, observing work and the office or factory conditions. They should also chat to staff and generally make themselves available to discuss matters.
Therefore, communication and information flows are much more flexible. Of course, there would still be formal reports and documents to deal with, but are supplemented (and fheir contnets influemced by) the informal information from MBWA.
