    Can you give me an example of the correct way to paraphrase for the RAP. I am mature student and haven’t done any academic essays in a very long time.

    You may find some examples on YouTube or articles on ‘Paraphrasing’ if you Google. The only succinct example I can give you is if you consult The Open Tuition Ultimate Guide to Referencing your RAP Golden Rules where there is an example in relation to quoting the CEO of M &S;
    however in a nutshell paraphrasing is about expressing the essence of something in fewer and different words. (Precis is very similar but the emphasis is on far fewer words but possibly using some of the dame vocabulary)

    The Referencing Guide is on our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/obu

    Thank you for the suggestions. I have taken a look initially at the golden rules on the website and it got me confused as I remember the high school way of quoting which is not changing the words. But if if you are paraphrasing quotes what is the difference between the later and actual paraphrase? I don’t want to leave a paraphrase that needs quotes or make it look it was plagiarism?

    Directly quoting word for word requires citation marks -paraphrasing does not. Both require a reference though. Direct quotations should be avoided where possible unless there is a good reason e.g. for emphasis or citing legislation or the CG Code. So the permissible amount of quotations depends on the topic (for Topic 8 there would be little justification for much if any direct citation ).

    You cannot paraphrase most accounting ratios as they are what they are however everything else must be written in your own words. It is unacceptable to copy and paste passages into your work and instances of these will be highlighted by the electronic checking program. Markers will fail if they consider there are too many of these.

    Read, Ask, Put in my own words (R.A.P.) is a flexible three-step strategy that students use to improve reading comprehension through questioning and paraphrasing. Students read a passage or text and then ask questions to help summarize what they have read in their own words.

    How to paraphrase online

    1-Read the original source carefully. …
    2-Identify the main point(s) and key words.
    3-Cover the original text and rewrite it in your own words. …
    4-Write the paraphrase in your own style. …
    5-Review your paraphrase to check it accurately reflects the original text but is in your 6-words and style.

    Students might apply the R.A.P. method—Read, Ask, Put in my own words—to increase their reading comprehension by asking questions and paraphrasing. After reading a piece or text, students will pose questions to assist them paraphrase tool what they have read.

    Thank you for your first post above on the steps to take in learning to paraphrase and your useful advice. However I would not condone the exclusive use of a special tool for paraphrasing – this is because it could encourage a rote approach to this important skill and doing a degree is about finding things out for yourself and developing your own skills and writing style.

    You might use such a tool to check against your own version but the important thing to remember is that you need to adopt a concise writing style for the report as it is very easy to exceed the word count. Also if you are lazy and take the approach that online tools are a magic bullet that will solve all your problems with no personal effort, you are doing yourself a disservice.
