Strategic change management – was not expecting that for 25 marks! Really struggled and couldn’t think of the model but I did throw in some ideas like scope for change, staff attitudes to change so hopefully examiner will take pity and give me a few marks. Didn’t do amazingly well on the other questions either so think i might be a few marks short of a pass. I used the BCG matrix for Q1 a because it can also be used for business units as well as products and it was fairly straight forward to apply. Hoping Santa brings me 50% in P3 for xmas!

I didn’t attempt Question 4 because of this part. I really couldn’t understand what it actually meant to say.

Look at part 4b on the June 08 paper to see the model that I think we should have used:
    https://www.accaglobal.com/pubs/students/acca/exams/p3/past_papers/p3_2008_jun_a.pdf

I didn’t BTW but hopefully should get some marks for having a go at least.

for me i didnt know if i used the right models for part 1

    a) BCG & parts of Pestel to back up financial info

bi) SWOT only naming strengths and weaknesses and refering them to the oppertunites set out and threats that may occur

bii) i used generic stratagy as the business was obviously a differentation and had to be set as a differentiation focus and use there current core compenteces from strengths to tackle their weaknesses by doing so other aspect if it looked at moving to a cost leader

    C) had no fkin clue just spun rubbish

anyone do the same ??? or have any comments

I am the most desperate of all, having passed all other ACCA papers at not more than 2 attempts at most since June 2009, and today’s P3 exam was my sixth (6th) attempt. Just like in today’s paper, I always have a good understanding of the answers to virtually all the questions but guess what, I AM A RIDICULOUSLY SLOW WRITER, and because P3 requires the greatest amount of writing of all ACCA papers, I’ve had to re-write it this much :(. I really hope to nick a 50% this time around having scored 48% and 49% in the June 2010 and December 2009 diets respectively. Please pray hard for me everyone. But over all, I think this was one of the best P3 papers to be honest.

yes we should have but i couldnt think of it…..so i used scope and nature model …there were 2 marks for justifcation…..and i think scope ( either realignment or transformation )and nature (either incremental or big bang) tells u the context
in this case scope was realignment and the nature was incremental….which means change will be based on existing paradigm….as it was mentioned the scenario that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the company…the strategy will be adaptation . I think i justified the model I used…lets hope examiner agrees ..lol

    I did 2&3 first.

Q2 harder then it looked, stuggled to get a lot points down. What did people write?

    Q3 ok

    1)
    a) BCG. I think it had the SBU’s as star (low market share), cash cow (high market share), dog/question mark (stop or invest in more pools). First I read the FS infor the wrong way round. Wasn’t it back to front??? I changed the answers a few times because of it!

B)i) I could see the model in my notes but didn’t pay much attention to it. The same one come up a couple years ago so didn’t think it would again as it was so small in the scheme of things! I think a got a couple of the points down though I don’t. I’m sure if I related it to the infor, did you need to?

B)ii) What did people put for this??? I wrote some stuff down, related it to the infor a bit but I’m not sure if it was correct.

    C) Ok I think, did people mention the Ashridge model for the parent (last one?)

Tough exam. Really time pressured, I think I attempted the last 30marks in 30mins.

I think I need to score 50/85ish. Fingers crossed!

It is my 5th attempt …i got 49 in my last attempt…..so ur not alone… i am not a slow writer but since i am a full time self study student I lack the appreciation of commercial reality 🙂

I was gutted by Q1, especially part b) c), not covered well in my revision and was confused what model should use for both b i) and ii)

Q1 a) I didn’t use BCG…..but applied some SWOT and commented on all three’s financial performance.

I chose Q2 and Q4. Q2 was ok and fair.

Q4 run out of time for part b) as wasted my time on planning Q1 b) and thinking what model should use…

I’ll be around margin, just hoping for the best to get 50%!

portfolio managers manages strategic business units (SBUs) as invetement portfolio and cotrol it through budgets by setting financial targets.

synergy managers attempts to cordinates SBUs function to benefit from synergies (operatinal marketing etc) parent exercise strategic control over SBUs.in the case scenario this approach was adopted.

parental developer: It is like parenting SBUs….identifying fit between SBU CSF and the skills , resource and understanding parent can provide and the opportunity it gets to help it ….(Ashridge model feel and benefit)

I used hybrid differentiation in 1c as the shoal plc will make a use of backward integration to control cost by providing fish to captain haddock and since the brand is already recognized in the public it will result in hybrid differentiation i-e keeping cost low and also differentiate the product with the help of brand. Am I wrong?

I am really worried about my handwriting in the paper. I hope the examiner doesnt get pissed off because it was really atrocious. You could easily guess that a toddler has written that.

while i voted the paper was ok, q1 was not very good for me. i just wrote the answers on the common sense. Q4 was a gift i think. and Q2 was rather good. but i stuck on q1 with strategic change((( yes, i know on time management and i am not glad on me for it.
    however always hope 🙂
