Hi All. Having completed all of my compulsory modules I am now left with the final two options to take in December and am trying to decide if taking P4 & P5 together is doable. I did quite well in F5 and F9 hence my choice for these modules and a quick scan over the syllabus gives me the impression it’s quite similar material? The only other idea would be to do the advanced audit as I’ve found so far that one can do very little work for the written papers as they are more common sense argument based.
The second question is regarding the study option. Up until now I’ve used LSBF online lectures and have found that after watching through them once I can pass with limited revision come exam time. However, circumstances have changed and I am no longer in a position to spend the cash on this expense so am probably going to have to make do with the study text alone. Looking through the opentuition site it would possibly make more sense for me to just use opentuition and not bother with the study text but the main reservation I have is the lack of printed material. Am i correct in thinking you cannot print opentution notes? If so how do people make do? Or is it a combination of the lectures available here and study text from BPP/Kaplan/LSBF etc?
My experience of LSBF is that they are generally very poor for the money you pay BUT the upside is that they can teach you just enough to pass rather than the entire syllabus which is never covered in its entirety.August 13, 2014 at 5:48 am #189764Hi. Papers P4 and P5 do certainly carry on from F9 and F5 respectively, and if you were happy with F9 and F5 then they are a good choice.
P5 is quite a bit different in style from F5 in that there is far less arithmetic (no calculations of variances, for example) and far more discussion in depth about how to attempt to improve the business.
P4 is (like F9) about 50% calculations and 50% written. There are not so many extra topics to learn, but the big difference from F9 is that the examiner attempts to make it more ‘real-life’. For investment appraisal (for example), in Paper F9 all the figures are given and there is really just one correct answer. An investment appraisal question in P4 is likely to contain a lot for information to sort through and very often requires you to make (and state) assumptions (as you would have to in real life), and very often to produce a report advising management. With regard to the study option, firstly you can print out pour Course Notes (download them, and then they should print out without problem). As with LSBF, we do not try in the lectures to cover every single topic in the syllabus, and because the Course Notes are for using with the lectures they are not meant to replace Study Texts.
My view is that it is useful to have a Study Text, but that being realistic it is better used more as a reference book – using it to check on areas where you are unsure from the lectures, and areas where you want more depth.Far more important is to have a Revision/Exam Kit from one of the approved publishers. Once you have been through the notes and the lectures, the best way of learning is to practice as many questions as you possibly can – especially, obviously, past exam questions – and to learn from your mistakes.
Finally, do make use of the Ask the Tutor Forums – if anything does not make sense or puzzles you at all, then do ask and we will do our best to help.

I struggled to pass F9. I am at crossroads to choose between P5 and P4. P5 because I was exempted to do F5. Please help. Where I am from tutors discourage students to do P4. basically its a struggle to find P4 tutor even the book stores rarely order P4 text.
August 18, 2014 at 12:16 pm #191324If you struggled with F9, and it is difficult to find tuition and books for P4, then I think you should choose P5.
P4 examines everything that was in F9 only in more detail, and is a very hard exam.P5 is certainly not easy, but do not worry too much about having been exempted from F5. In Paper F5 there are a lot of arithmetical techniques to learn, but very few of these are examined in P5. P5 is much more interpreting information and advising about how to manage a business better, than performing lots of calculations.
