Dear John
I know that we have several approaches to calculate operational and planning variances.
Do we get the same answer whichever approach we use?
I worked Dec 2009 Q1 and my answer (part b) is completely different from that of the examiner.

No – the answers will be different (although the total variance will be the same).
However best is to use the method in the examiners student accountant article (which is the same as the method he used in the Dec 2009 question).
