Why are some questions in the multiple choice section worth one mark and others two? Is that just a reflection on how difficult the question is or are there two correct answers?

Only 1 correct answer for each.
2 mark Qs are choose 1 from 4; 1 mark Qs are choose 1 from 3 or 2
