A manufacturing company uses three processes to make its two products, X and Y. The time available on the three processes is reduced because of the need for preventative maintenance and rest breaks.
The table below details the process times per product and daily time available:

For Process 1: 22 hrs available. 1.00 hr required to make product X. 0.75 hr required to make product Y
For Process 2: 22 hrs available. 0.75hr required to make product X. 1.00 hr required to make product Y
For Process 3: 18 hrs available. 1.00 hr required to make product X. 0.50 hr required to make product Y

Daily demand for product X and product Y is 10 units and 16 units respectively.

Which of the following will improve throughput?
A Increasing the efficiency of the maintenance routine for Process 2
B Increasing the demand for both products
C Reducing the time taken for rest breaks on Process 3
D Reducing the time product X requires for Process 1

Would you please help me with the math. I can’t get why A is the answer. thank you

Please do not type out questions from the BPP Revision Kit in full because it is breach of copyright for it to be posted on our website. I have the Revision Kit and so you only need to tell me which question you are asking about.

To be able to produce to meet the demand would require:

    In Process 1: (10 x 1.00) + (16 x 0.75) = 22 hours
    In Process 2: (10 x 0.75) + (16 x 1.00) = 23.5 hours
    In Process 3: (10 x 1.00) + (16 x 0.50) = 18 hours

Processes 1 and 3 have enough hours to be able to meet the demand. However in Process 2 they only have 22 hours available and therefore the business cannot produce as many as are demanded. Process 2 is the bottleneck which is restricting the production.

The only way of being able to produce the units demanded would be to make Process 2 more efficient. That would mean they could produce the units faster and would then be able to meet the demand.
