Hello comrades! Hope all’s doing well.

I want to ask a quick question about mentor meetings. It might sound silly but please note I am only trying to get everything as right as possible to pass

The thing is although my mentor and I are in the same city, due to some practical restraints I am unable to meet her right now in person at a place. I’m running out of time so I do not wish to delay the meeting any further.

So am I allowed to hold at least the first meeting with her on Skype? I will do my level best to arrange the next meetings face-to-face. Is that a problem if one meeting is through Skype and the other 2 meetings are face-to-face in person?

Would appreciate any knowledge you share regarding the mode of mentor meetings

    Thanks a bunch!

    Hi,

I recently became an ACCA affiliate and I’m thinking of doing my degree for this May submission. I’m currently looking for a mentor but i have no idea who to pick. Is there like a list of mentor recommendations with higher rate of mentee pass rate?

    Hi

I found this link for Kaplan: https://financial.kaplan.co.uk/trainingandquals/accountancy/acca/courses/pages/oxford-brookes-degree.aspx

I am sure if you google for pass rates of other tuition providers, you will find most of them.

There is also a list of OBU approved mentors. The link is: https://www.oxfordbrookesmentoring.co.uk/mentees/register

Once you register as a mentee, you will be able to see all the OBU approved mentors.

I am listed under Anna Lishman.

@avian will – with the advent of Skype it is possible to have ‘meetings’ on the net.

(For example our Recommended Mentor the Learning Luminarium although based in Singapore can and do mentor worldwide via Skype offering different mentoring packages to suit differing student requirements)

    Hi

I wanted to ask how do you make a powerpoint presentation to your mentor if you are holding the meetings online, say using Skype? Do you use the share screen facility or is there a more convenient way of making the presentation?

Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Extract from Re-Submission Guide

“You do not have to physically meet with your mentor – you can use conferencing
facilities/Skype instead. Telephone calls and emails are not sufficient for
    presentation purposes”

@avian will -I was hoping an actual mentor would answer your question properly (I don’t actually currently mentor for the OBU BSc).

I have used Skype however. I suppose I would forward a copy of the presentation anyway (as sometimes the signal can cause break-ups) before calling them and at the appropriate time during your conversion go into the PowerPoint presentation clearly announcing each slide and suggest they refer to it. If you use a laptop with a decent size screen you should be able to still have a small Skype window open that you can flick back into

I suggest maybe you practise this first with a friend.

Suggestions from anyone else and better advice anyone?

    Hi @Trephena

I just wanted to confirm about mentor’s involvement in relation to RAP submission. My mentor said she received an email wherein she was asked to verify that she was my mentor. She was directed to a window wherein she had to just click ‘Yes’ and it stated ”verification successful”. All sounds reassuring but I’m just wondering is that it?

She wasn’t asked for her ACCA number or anything. Was she supposed to log in to anywhere? Or was that just it? Does that mean my submission process is complete?

@avian will – Yes hun that should be it! 🙂 (It wouldn’t say verification successful if there was a prob).

    Ok… thanks 😀

I just got in doubt because I find it rather odd they don’t ask for the mentor’s ACCA number anywhere; not from me; not from her. Hmm… anyhoo… I’m surely done then yippy!!

Thanks so very much for everything @Trephena!

@avian will – possibly the system cross-checks to the ACCA membership database (and no doubt going forward will cross check to the mentor database). I think they do occasionally randomly contact the mentor to verify that they have indeed mentored the student but that would be at a later stage of proceedings.

Were you always a ‘worried child?’ !!!! 🙂

    Cross-check with database…Right that makes sense @Trephena

Well… ummm yes I am quite the worrier [blush] lol… and well in the past I missed big things for overlooking small details so now I have this phobia that if I haven’t taken care of most things, then something minute will come back to haunt me. I know how unhealthy that kind of thinking is but I hope to get over it eventually. Anyhoo, thanks again and again for the reassurance 😀 I’m so very grateful for all your contribution to all of us!

I’ve just sit F9 last Dec and if I have passed I am intending to do OBU RAP but I feel really overwhelmed as barely I have started to get the grip in how to study to pass ACCA exams but I have no idea how to tackle a project at university level. I thought to enrol with Kaplan to get a mentor as I am not working right now but cannot do it till Feb as I dont know if I pass… sorry but I am really confused and dont know what to do first. Is anybody in a similiar situation? TIA

@alia – I suggest that you look at our homepages
    https://opentuition.com/obu/
where there is a lot of background information and there should also be a link to the latest OBU Information Pack. You may find some of our FAQs are helpful too as they give some broad outlines on selecting a topic. You can use our search facility using a few key words to find answers to previous similar queries and to find the relevant forum to post your queries (rather than opening a new topic each time).

It will be compulsory to use a listed mentor FROM P31 and while we particularly recommend The Learning Luminarium for both quality and price that is not to say that Kaplan and other listed mentors are not suitable. It is a case of choosing an OBU listed one that suits your own particular needs and pocket.

@chironde – it very much depends on the level and expertise of the mentor and the service they offer and the country the mentor resides in (and dare I say the amount the mentor thinks they can get away with?!). Sometimes it is a case of you get what you pay for but that said I really don’t think anyone can justify charging a lot more than GBP 400 for the basic 3 meetings and sign off. However I know some UK colleges were charging GBP 500 several years back).

If you want a full professional read through and the equivalent of the marker feedback and suggestions for improvement then expect to pay considerably more. I suggest you shop around and look at track records of mentors and possibly use the fees charged by our recommended mentors as a guide. Also try to have a preliminary free consultation to ascertain that you feel comfortable and the mentor is right for you and remember of course with Skype your mentor can reside in any part of the world. Good luck! 😀

I relocated from my country and completed my meetings with my mentor. But my mentor has a very busy schedule and has not done the mentorship course. Where do I go from here?
