Hammad Ahmed Qureshi – OBU Registered MentorJanuary 11, 2016 at 11:38 pm #294147Hi Students,
I have received the latest Newsletter from OBU and would like to share with you important highlights and new changes. Many students are confused about selection of topic 8, its comparison and specific Industry. Here you will find detail clarification from OBU.
The OBU BSc office have had a number of e-mailed questions about the need for
comparators for Topic 8.This situation clearly needs to be clarified:
IMPORTANT:
TOPIC 8 – COMPARATORS
Students undertaking Topic 8 are required to make a financial analytical comparison with a suitable comparator
company (or an industry average) within their RAP. The minimum acceptable comparison is one year, however to obtain a higher grade pass it is necessary to include 2 or 3 year comparisons.Ali Farooq
OBU Registered Mentor.January 12, 2016 at 12:12 am #294148Dear Sir,
Thank you so much for updating. It is really helpful and informative. I decided to incorporate one year comparison because i was not aware it does effect on my grade. My goodness I just read now three year comparison will be helpful to gain higher grade.I have a question about topic 8, i heard many student choose topic 8 and passing ratio of topic 8 is very low if this is a case please suggest me suitable topic for my Research analysis Project
January 12, 2016 at 12:32 am #294149@Neelam -the reason only one year’s comparisons will only get you a C grade is that a better grade requires deeper analysis and critical thought. This is only possible if comparisons go over more or less the same period as the main company and the evaluation itself is good..
Yes first time submissions for T8 have a low pass rate as the evaluation and, analysis is usually inadequate. T17 currently has the best pass rate -probably about 67% for first time submissions and far exceeds the 57% overall average pass rate for all topics (which included resubmissions as well as first time submissions) for both P30 & P31.
I have been recommending T17 to students and know from feedback that some students who had weak mentors but used our T17 forums for guidance managed to achieve grade Bs. (I did recommend T17 to Vinessen who I personally think is making a big mistake in going for T15 as like T8 it has a low pass rate – but his RAP and his choice)
January 18, 2016 at 8:42 am #295622Hi @Neelam,
Thank you Neelam for asking relevant question. Thank you TREPHENA for your valuable input.
Many students misunderstand about topic 8. In my field experience, most of the students asked the same question about low passing rate of topic 8. this is not necessarily the case. Get your project passed If you will critically evaluate the business and financial performance of the company and make a comparison over three year period. You just need to get the right direction from your mentor to understand the overall structure of the project and complete successfully by applying your deep research/analysis and practical concepts.
I recommend Topic 8 and Topic 19 to students, both topics are more familiar with ACCA studies and student’s experience.
Hope the answer of the question.

Ali Farooq
BSC Registered Mentor.January 18, 2016 at 11:12 am #295695@Ali Farooq -thank you for your input. I do not have any statistics for T19 because very few students submit on this topic -unfortunately! However I know that ruva whom I helped on our T19 Forum topic to tackle this was successful.
However the statistical fact remains that T8 has only about a 48% first time round pass rate increasing though on resubmission -whereas 2/3 of students submitting on T17 are successful with their first attempt. Also the possibility of getting a B or A grade for T17 is significantly higher too as the majority of T8s if they pass, get a C (both Alfred and eminathsana who predominantly relied on our T17 forum got B grades). T17 is very much alligned with ACCA studies in terms of P1 and auditing.
T8 is not the lowest when it comes to chances of passing -from my contacts on the OBU marking team it seems there is a high correlation between the reliance on primary data in a report and the ‘chances’ of it failing. This is because surveys and data collection techniques are poorly conducted and/ or the student has made up the results.
Although structure is important, evaluation and reliable sources are key to passing any topic. I have an article on Evaluation and Analysis on our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/OBU that all students are recommended to read so that they understand the correct way to approach this in their RAP
January 19, 2016 at 1:21 pm #296264@ Mr Hammad Ahmed Qureshi,
hi Sir hope you doing well, sorry for my late reply, actually concerning my question above about the published account less than 90 days note that i had gone through the audited financial report of my chosen company and i had noticed that the external auditors report had been signed on the 23rd of February for the year 2014. this means same will be apply for the year 2015 and it will be published well after 23 February 2015. therefore it will be less than 90 days. as such my comparison for my rap will be based only for 2012, 2013 and 2014. can you confirm if i am right please…thank you sir
January 19, 2016 at 10:29 pm #296440January 25, 2016 at 11:25 am #297808Hi Ali,

January 25, 2016 at 5:05 pm #297869Dear Ahmed,,

Ali FarooqJanuary 30, 2016 at 5:58 pm #298580hi am planning to submit my RAP this may for topic 8. its so refreshing to discover this website becoz its so useful.the oxford rap guide doesnt cover all the issues and jus want to express gratitude for the good work.dankie ngiyabonga thank ya!
having read the latest rap guide for topic 8 i saw the benchmarked sectors. iam having a problem not inique to me of choosing organisation. my problem is that most organisations iam encountering are groups which have subsidiaries which pperate in the benchmark sectors
can i use subsidiaries for comparison?ibstead of groups?
January 30, 2016 at 6:10 pm #298582can i study a subsidiary of the group say for example econet wireless zimbabwe is a subsidiary of of econet group which is a global group and has interests that are not in the benchmark sectors.econot group its parent is not listef and its annual statements are not easy to find.econet wireless is listed and has good information on it and is based in one country
can i choose econet wireless and another local organization which is not part of a group but is a direct competiter in the market and country where econet wireless operate?January 31, 2016 at 7:16 am #298608would any1 pleas suggest companies for topic 8 which have a good media presence as i am stuck.
January 31, 2016 at 8:59 am #298614Hi @Shangara,
Have you discussed your topic and organisation with your project Mentor in your first meeting?
I am afraid why do you not discuss this limitation with your Mentor before working on your project. All these factor will be brought to the attention of your Mentor and get his/her valuable suggestion. OBU is continuously making new changes, improving project quality and allow you to get guidance properly. You should not write your project without meetings and avoid plagiarism.
I would like to suggest you to change your company or find individual accounts of your company. do not make simple things complicated. analysis on consolidated accounts is not too easy and you have to consider word limit as well. There is no restriction to select organisation from any country. there is a plenty of time and organisations you easily CAN select and work on them. Make your life easy. I suggest you to select Verizon vs at&t (Telecommunication) US based companies or United Airlines vs American Airlines US based companies, Gilliard vs Abbott or GSK vs Pfizer.

Ali FarooqFebruary 5, 2016 at 6:17 pm #299183Hi,
I have chosen topic 8 for my RAP.
Due to industry specific sectors i chose mobile telecommunication industry.
However I have problems in chosing my comparator.
My organisation is a foreign entity mobile service provider who is registered in Sri Lanka as a public limited company and listed in stock exchange.
Therefore the organisation has acquired subsisdiaries in Sri Lanka and is audited by the external auditors of Sri Lanka.
Hence all the secondary information is available due its listed status.
All the other mobile service provider are private companies registered in Sri Lanka whose head office is overseas.Hence the company is srilanka is merely a private company, subsidiary of the headoffice.
Therefore no individual fianncials are publicly available, only consolidated fianancials of the head office and all its subsidiaries available in there currency.
Hence comparing my orgainsation, local PLC is not probable with the other mobile service providers firstly due to non availability of fianancials and other due to being private companies.
But, there is only one PLC in srilanka which is goverment owned whose financials are publicly available. It provides mobile services, fixed telecommunications and other services.
My orgainsation is privately owned company which is PLC listed in stock exchange, whereas the comparator is a PLC owned by the goverment.
My fear is whether the comparision is possible between PRIVATE and GOVERMENT owned companies as explained above.
Eventhough my organisation fits into the category mobile telecommunication sector the comparator does not fit perfectly in the mobile telecommunication sector .
Can i continue with this?
February 7, 2016 at 12:10 am #299555Remember the golden rule for analysis is Like With Like. Don’t become too narrow with this criteria.
If telecommunication organisation is owned by government that effects the way of management of the company not effect Like With Like comparison. Hence, you can compare a private or public limited company with a government owned organisation.
With regards to fitting under definition of telecommunication sector, you may tell me name of the company so i can look at it. Further, you may read below definition of OBU to ascertain comparator meets definition and is a telecommunication company:
“Providers of mobile telephone service, including cellular, satellite and paging services. Include wireless tower companies that own, operates and lease mobile site towers to multiple wireless service providers”.
Please ensure that if your company operates overseas and have consolidated accounts then your comparative should also operate overseas, other wise it will not be like with like. Also, ensure if it operates locally then you compare with a local company. You may also request accounts from private company if they can provide.
If you have any further questions, please ask.

OBU Registered Mentor.February 9, 2016 at 2:10 pm #299824Hi.My mentor advice me not to get a plagiarism check because these websites keep a copy of our scripts hence if we use them we will surely get in the plagiarism trouble. How true is that?
NOTE ADDED BY TREPHENA
Do not use Turnitin – you will end up with an ACO referral. If you want to use a plagiarism checker use WritecheckFebruary 9, 2016 at 4:33 pm #299836Hi @Bakhtawer,
Please read the below mentioned paragraph (Ref: pg 49 of BSC Info Pack 2015/2016).
7.d.x) Ensuring the academic integrity of your project
The University requires that your project is all your own work. Specifically that you have not copied your work from any other student, textbook, journal or similar source, either in small or large amounts. Students are permitted to use small amounts of quoted text, which must be fully referenced, but must not copy large sections of text and pass this off as their own work. See APPENDIX 3 for more details. The University recommends that student check their own work against standard databases, and has identified WriteCheck™ (https://www.writecheck.com) as a suitable product for formative checking as this does not permanently place the work in the database.

OBU Registered MentorFebruary 9, 2016 at 4:48 pm #299838I am still considering which company to choose.I have a few concerns.First that if I choose a company based in the uk say, British telecom and compare it to a Us based co. say At&T both their accounts will be in different currencies. If I can convert the pound sterlings to dollars I am afraid that the company’s performance may be undermined due to conversion and the process may become more challenging for me.
secondly There are very few listed pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan and most of them are taken by my class mates.I want to pick a company based abroad but most of those are GROUPS.hence their consolidated accounts are available but not individual. For instance Johnson and johnson. Could you recommend some companies to me or perhaps some list where I will be able to find individual companies.
February 9, 2016 at 7:48 pm #299861Hi @Bakhtawer,
Telecommunication Companies in the USA: AT&A, Tmobile, verizon, comcast, sprint,
Airline in the USA: United Airlines vs American Airlines.
There is lot of pharmaceutical companies in the USA, develop your research skills to get relevant information. I am afraid why are you not selecting companies from Pakistan. It does not matter whether how many person selected the same company.
I suggest you to get help from your project mentor from the beginning to the end because there are strict rules for BSc. project.

Ali FarooqFebruary 9, 2016 at 10:06 pm #299869Can you please confirm from mentor why he is recommending no check? There can be a risk of plagiarism but may be he is trying to save your additional cost. As a student, you know that project is prepared by you and you did not copy paste anything, hence it is recommended to check but not compulsory. Further, don’t upload thesis on different plagiarism website, use writecheck only as it is true they keep a copy.
With regards to difference in currency, you need to translate financial statements of other company in the currency of your main company at the rates recommended by IAS 21. Also note that you should do like with like comparison. Both of your companies must operate in more than one country, it cannot be like you compare local accounts of British Telecommunication with local of US based company as both operate in different jurisdiction with different areas. However, you may compare their consolidated accounts if they are multinationals operating globally in many or some countries.
If your classmates have chosen the companies operating in Pakistan, there is no issue in choosing same company but you should ensure you keep your RAP safe and no copy by colleagues.

Hammad Ahmed Qureshi – OBU Registered Mentor.February 10, 2016 at 5:07 am #299883This was really helpful.Final word of advice sir? Can I compare Bell Canada with Rogers? They’re in the same country.Give each other though competition. Are both groups.Operating internationally.
February 10, 2016 at 9:21 am #299912Please note – currency translation is really an irrelevance as in most of your RAP financial analysis you should be using ratios. Think about it – the ratios help produce a level playing field. Gross profit margins need no currency translations and neither does inventory turnover or anything that can be calculated as a ratio. Use of absolute figures is both unnecessary and inappropriate in most of the report and therefore it is unnecessary to do any currency translations apart from perhaps if you are doing a direct comparison of their revenues and then you should be careful in the conclusions that you draw. Otherwise by using currency translation you could be artificially introducing a difference in the comparisons which in fact doesn’t exist. A company’s strategies are unlikely to have been decided upon by the managers by looking at the currency used by the comparator that you happen to have decided to pair it with. Therefore if the rates have shifted considerably you would be showing a comparative trend that could be based mainly on such fluctuations and this would therefore be artificial
Besides if you were trying to compare dividend payments per share for example neither the year end rate nor the average rate would be appropriate as the dividend is paid on a certain date based on the nominal value of the shares stated in the same country’s currency and normally the dividend is a proportion of that so translating it into another currency becomes a bit of a nonsense.
February 12, 2016 at 2:50 am #300096Yes, you can compare Bell & Rogers. Further, i agree with Trephena clarification above, you can follow her approach on currency translation too.
Thank you Trephena.

Hammad Ahmed Qureshi – OBU Registered MentorFebruary 12, 2016 at 4:31 am #300100I recommend you not to select the company where you have to translate Financial Statements and create unnecessary difference ultimately you may miss your main objective of BSc project. Develop your research skills and reading skills you will find number of companies in your country and abroad..
