Hi John!
In sample questions of may/ june 2017, concerning the question on variance, a line says:
“A new material has also been chosen by GPST which costs only $2.85 per meter which 5% cheaper than material used on the previous dresses,”
1. To calculate the ‘old’ cost of the previous dress, I’ve done:
-2.85 x 5%= $0.1425
-$2.85 + $0.1425= $2.9925
2. I’ve used $2.9925 to calculate the appropriate variances. However, the examiner have got $3 and use this figure to calculate variances.
3. Will I be awarded the full marks for using $2.9925 or I should have round it?
Thanks.
You would have lost marks – not because of rounding, but because your figure is not correct.
If 2.85 is 5% cheaper than the material used, then is must be 95% of the cost of the material used.
Therefore the cost of the material used must be 2.85/95% = 3.00
