I technically started in December by reading through the book and making notes but my classes started in January and i believe I truly started learning and processing it all from Jan.

Make sure to create a standard summary page for each standard, this is so key for your revision. Then, upon answering exam questions read through your summary and refresh yourself on the topic and then attempt a question from the exam kit relevant to that standard. I know the syllabus looks overwhelming but remember the SBR markers are generous.

In the exam if you have no clue (which I found myself in this situation many times in my SBR exam) just write out the relevant standard and only the relevant bits then apply it to the scenario, this should get you some marks.

Those who are asking how to study for this exam – from my experience. I had studied all the content well – and I spent time relying on studying/analysing past papers – and answering questions from them. However – what shocked me, was that the questions in this exam were no way in any way similar to any of the past papers. That’s what really caught me off guard and probably many other students felt the same. Its at this point you have to rely on your own knowledge and common sense. So learning all the content is the best way to get through this paper. Don’t just rely on past papers.

Yes the paper was horrific! I was sure I’d failed when I left, luckily I did not.

2nd attempt and failed! went in even more prepared than last time and scored a lower grade. Literally attempted every part of the questions and still scored so low! Feels like my motivation is now under a rock because I summarised all my standards, did tonnes of past papers and even read allll the useless technical articles which were not even relevant for this exam. I don’t even understand where I went wrong or what I need to be working on. Its so disheartening. And i can’t even do an admin review as others have stated you’re just giving acca your money with no proper feedback. I haven’t muster the courage to even tell a single family member even though i took so much time away to just study. I know its just an exam and not the end of the world but i really in alot of effort and got nothing.

Sana – Based on what you said, I don’t think its your knowledge that’s causing you a problem.

For any question you get, summarise the main points of relevance, then take that and apply to the scenario and answer the question they ask. Eg. if they talk about IAS 38 – just simply state the quick rules about this (that’s showing your knowledge). Then apply that to the scenario and answer the question they have asked. Only stating the rules gains you almost no or little marks.

This technique I was told usually helps you get half the marks or more for each question.

Not sure you can remember – but in the exam there was a question about some ships and that the management was being ignorant of their valuations despite going through a recession. So talking about the rules of impairment was necessary, and then applying to scenario and stating whether the management did the right thing or not by not impairing their assets. What should they have done etc?

    Hope it helps.

It happens to many of us. This is very usual in Professional Exams. You just need to revise your strategy. Yes Please dont waste your money on admin review. Instead just gather yourself for the next attempt. Seems like you have all the knowledge of the standards but you have to do the application which matters the most in this exam. You always have to give a suggested solution within the scenario. The technical artiecles are not uselss many times exams come from it but please remember its not only the knowldge from technical articles but its the applaication. Please gather yourself and dont be demotivated it has happened to me many times and i can understand what you are going thorugh but not giving up is the key and learning from the mistakes is most important. Start doing all the applications to the exam questions only and you will clear it in this attempt for sure. Just foucs on exam questions and application. Remember the three golden steps. 1. State the rule.. 2. Applicaiton..3, Conclusion
