Slack is where you have a less than or equal constraint, and at the optimal solution you are using less than the maximum available – the difference is the slack (and this is the usual situation in the exam.
Surplus is where you have a more than or equal constraint, and at the optimal solution you are using more than the minimum – the difference is the surplus (this is not common in the exam).
