I don’t know if it’s because it’s late in the evening and my brain has gievn up on me or wther it’s just going completely over my head but in the open tuition notes for Paper F5, the linear programming question in Chapter 6 has me completely baffled.
I have worked out the contraints which match back to the answers provided but when looking at the graph I just cannot make head nor tail of it.
It’s line A with plotted points at 30 and 35, I just don’t know where this line is coming from. I don’t know if I’ve missed something but the labour constraint is 5S+6E so I would have assumed the plots should be at 50 and 60. Also where is the 2.5 coming from?
Sorry if this is a stupid question. I’ve been studying all day and just spent the last hour staring at this question like it’s in a different language. Appreciate any insight you can give me.

Line A is the graph of labour: 5S + 6E = 180
When S = 0 then E = 180/6 = 30
When E = 0 then S = 180/5 = 36
These are the two points for drawing the line. The 2.5 is simply in order to get two equations with the same number of S’s. If you multiply 2S in the first equation by 2.5 then you get 5S. This is the same number of S’s as in the other equation and so when you subtract one equation from the other the S’s disappear and you can calculate the value of E.
November 8, 2010 at 5:11 pm #70224Thanks John. Have yet to have a chance to watch the videos as I’ve been studying at my desk after work and the computer unfortunately wont let me view viadeos. I’ll be sure to do so at home.
