    hi sir,

    i am doing a question from kaplan exam kit

    the question is:-

    the time taken to produce each of the first four batches of a new product were as follows:

    batch number time taken
    1 100 minutes
    2 70 minutes
    3 59 minutes
    4 55 minutes
    what was the rate of learning closest to? (1 d.p)
    ____________________%

    i took 100 + 70 + 59 + 55= 284 minutes
    after this i took 284 minutes/4 = 71 (cumulative average time)
    after this i took 71/100 minutes i got 0.71 which is 71% as the learning rate
    i checked the answer and got it wrong.
    i dont know where i went wrong please kindly guide me ..

    As per Sir Moffat,
    Use a formula

    y = a times x exponent b
    71 = 100 times 4 exp a

    So a = log 0.71/log 4 = -0.247
    But a = log LR / log 2

    So log LR = -0.247 * log 2 = -0.07437

    And LR = 10 exp -0.07437 = 84.3%

    This page is not for me to reply so I just suggested for Sir Moffat to come and approve.

    The average time per unit if they make 4 units is indeed 71 minutes.

    However making 4 units involved doubling two times.

    So 100 x r^2 = 71
    Therefore r = 0.843 (or 84.3%)

    (There is no need to use the formula, and questions asking you to calculate the learning rate will always be ‘doubling’ questions)
