Good Day
I came across this question which has completely puzzled me from the BPP 2020 revision kit.*Time for first batch is 1500 hours.
The total time for the first 16 batches of 100 units was 9,000 hours.
What was the actual learning rate closest to (to the nearest %)?The answer given is:
The correct answer is: 78%
Batches Total time Average time/unit
1 1,500 1,500
2 1,500 * r
4 1,500 * r2
8 1,500 * r3
16 9,000 1,500 * r4
9,000 = 16 * 1,500 r4
9,000/(16 * 1,500) = r4
r = 0.78 or 78%I do not understand this use of r

Forgive me, but you cannot expect me to type out my lectures again here 🙂
September 4, 2021 at 5:01 am #634215Ok noted sir let me go through it again
September 4, 2021 at 6:19 am #634222Thank you, sir, I was simply failing to get the r4 through my calculator but the rest of my workings were correct.
I finally managed to get the r4 by getting the square root of 0.375 then finally getting the square root of 0.612.
This was the point I was failingSeptember 4, 2021 at 11:03 am #634257Ah, not I understand your problem 🙂
Yes, the fourth root is the same as taking the square root twice. However that would not help if you needed to take the 5th root.
You need a scientific calculator (or you can use the on-screen scientific calculator provided with the exam). Most calculators will have a button specifically to take n’th roots (you may have to look in the manual as to how to use it).
Alternatively, you should have been taught at school that taking the 4th root is the same as taking it to the power of 1/4 (i.e. 0.25). Similarly taking the 5th root is the same as taking it to the power of 1/5 (i.e. 0.2).September 6, 2021 at 3:12 pm #634583Ohhh
Thank you sir I didn’t know this actually.September 6, 2021 at 5:19 pm #634603You are welcome 🙂
