    hi sir,

    i am doing a question from kaplan exam kit
    the question is

    caroline has recently developed a new product. the nature of carolines work is repetitive, and it is usual for there to be an 80% learning effect when a new product is developed. the time taken for the first unit was 22 minutes. an 80% learning effect applies.

    what is the time to be taken for the fourth unit in minutes?
    a. 17.6 minutes
    b. 14.08 minutes
    c 15.45 minutes
    d. 9.98 minutes

    the way i have done this question is:-

    units cumulative average time total time
    1 22 minutes 22 minutes
    2 (22*0.8) 17.6 minutes 35.2 minutes
    4 (17.6*0.8) 14.08 minutes 56.32 minutes

    so i got my answer as option b (14.08 minutes) but when i checked its wrong
    please guide me..

    I think Sir Moffat taught it this way :

    Time for 4th unit = Time for first 4units less time for first 3units

    What you got is time for first 4units and not for a fourth unit.

    So to get time for first 3units, your basic approach won’t apply as 3 is not a multiple of 2.
    y = a times x exponent b where y= average time for first x units and b= log0.8/log2=0.3219

    y= 22*3 exp -0.3219=15.447
    Time for first 3units
    = 3*150447 =46.34

    For 4units you hoy 56.32

    So 56.32 – 46.34 = 9.98 minutes

    Is this right Sir Moffat?

    Fredymalia: Please do not answer in this forum, because it is Ask the Tutor (but please do help people in the other F5 forum 🙂 )

    Sattar786: You have calculate the average time per unit if they make 4 units. That is not what is asked for – the question asks for the time for the 4th unit, and what Fredymalia has written is correct.
