Lot of technical issues retaking next week… which is a bummer because questions were very nice.
June 7, 2023 at 5:25 pm #686375Have you booked for next week? I also faced a lot of technical issues.
What questions did you get though?June 7, 2023 at 5:50 pm #686385I had
q1 budgeting method, variance analysis and divisional performance (don’t remember company name).
q2 was JV strategic partner performance problems and JV performance measurement/issues.
Don’t remember much about q3 that’s also where all technical isssues accumulated.
What was yours?
Yes retaking next week but this tech issues are very bad, distracting blocking the annexes…June 7, 2023 at 6:28 pm #686390AnonymousInactive- Topics: 0

I had the same questions. Way much more text in the scenarios than I had imagined… and 3 spreadsheets in Q1?
June 7, 2023 at 7:14 pm #686398We’re you able to calculate the variances and the joint venture?
June 7, 2023 at 7:30 pm #686401Q1 for me was Kaizen, JIT and 6 Sigma
Q2 EVA VBM
Q3 League tables – schools public sectorJune 7, 2023 at 7:34 pm #686402I had the one with budgeting. A lot of tex and 3 spreadsheets in Q1.
Run out of time to finish Q2 however Q1 and Q3 done- no idea if will be enough to pass. Don’t think so 🙁
June 7, 2023 at 7:53 pm #686406I had budgeting, Variances, Joint Venture and a Private fee charging University.
Variances for 18 marks was very unexpected and I honestly didn’t think it would come up so barely did any work on them in the run up to the exam.
I spent far too long on Q1 and left myself with 70 mins for Q2 and Q3
Not sure how I will get on overall.

I got the same questions
June 7, 2023 at 8:30 pm #686410I also had that question with variances, got result of around 650.000 i think? Took me over an hour to do that.
It was super hard exam, I expected at least more guidance in the scenarios.
What did you write on performance measures for lecturers in college? And joint venture question, what was that, so many points but I had no idea what to talk about :/June 7, 2023 at 8:56 pm #686414Lecturers I think I covered things like the things the Dean wanted to measure them on were beyond their own control. They couldn’t make a student log in to the Virtual Platform X number of times nor could they make them do X number of activities on the platform either.
It needed to be more related to things the lecturer could control otherwise the lecturer would be demotivated by an impossible target.
I could have been on a completely wrong path but it was generally that kind of thing
June 7, 2023 at 9:19 pm #686403Hi
I got another variant, no hard questions but very time pressured.1st question was on change in management systems whereby an electrical company wants to adopt kaisen costing, JIT and Six sigma in different departments and we have to assess whether it would fit the organaisation. Not much details were provided on the company, it was hard to relate the scenario to the answer.
Q2 was on variables used to assess students and lecturers in university and whether the variables were appropriate. For student, i said that some variables were not appropriate as time spent on learning platform did not mean that they were actually studying. I suggested that number of clicks on the platform would be better a Performance measure. 2nd part was on measurement for lecturers. I said that the measures were not appropriate at all as the lecturers had no control on the amount of time a student spent on the platform.
Q3 was on BSC in a hair saloon chain. The 1st part was on whether the metrics were balanced, and included exernal internal short term long term factors. Then on problems linked to implementing BSC. Quite straightforward question this one.
June 8, 2023 at 2:47 am #686431All of your 3 questions are the same as mine, Q1 was disaster. Q2 and 3 quite straight forward, in Q1 no info provided to Kaizen and JIT, especially these 2 do not even have lots of rote leaning things to write about!
June 8, 2023 at 8:24 am #686454There were no calculation part except for JIT?
June 8, 2023 at 10:19 am #686469I have not prepared anything on variance, and it came out unexpected. I almost lost the 30 marks in section A. Section B and C was a bit more ok. Not expecting a passing mark for this paper. Will retake in September.
June 8, 2023 at 10:31 am #686471I found this exam difficult. I practised a lot of practise questions and did a few mock exams/past papers. On all the practise I did, I never came across a 18 mark variance question, 25 marks dedicated to JV and strategic partnership.
I thought the question were a bit unfair, especially with the mark allocations.
Also, does anyone know what the examiner was trying to ask on the third question (Dean of university)? I struggled to link it to any of my technical knowledge, especially part C the app question?
June 8, 2023 at 10:36 am #686476Like a few of you, I had budgeting, Variances, Joint Venture and a Private fee charging University.
Spent most of my time looking at Q1 which took a toll when I came to look at Q3 and only had about 40 min- if that- to complete it… did not even have enough time to even attempt the last part of Q3 which if I am not mistaken was an 8 marker (0 marks for that one).
Did not expect variance analysis to come up- which is such fundamental and basic knowledge picked up from PM- spent quite a bit of time remembering myself how to calculate some of the usage/efficiency variances and knowing that I had to do it all under time constraints.
Something I found quite peculiar (and annoying at the same time) was the fact that we did not get any questions on EVA/VBM/ABM, Performance management systems, performance models, management styles, EMA/ESG, NPFO/VFM and other really big parts of the APM syllabus. I guess some of these could’ve been applied to the answers but only to a very small extent.
Time management was a complete disaster but the overwhelming number of spreadsheets, huge amounts of information were not helpful.
Hope all that hard work paid off! Got to keep optimistic!
June 8, 2023 at 10:46 am #686477I agree it was a very strange exam in that the majority of things you would expect to see were nowhere to be seen.
June 8, 2023 at 12:57 pm #686502Q1 Kaizen Costings different to standard costing. JIT issues implementing and a calc on cost benefit analysis. Then six sigma and applying to JIT and Kaizen Costing
Q2 Schools with problems with league tables and value for money 3es with a measurement for each
Q3 VBM , changes from current measurements ROCE to VBM ie EVA.Then a 5 mark EVA calcWas very surprised with lack of calcs in exam especially thrown by a cost benefit analysis.didnt spend too much time on it .It was 15 marker but issues with JIT was likely 5 marks out of that 15. Probably picked up for a few marks for a couple of savings such as cost saved on employees. It wasnt layed out very well. Also mentioned the near 90% decrease in inventory holding but there wasnt info too much fin info on that inv holding cost only that provisions increased from one year to the next
June 8, 2023 at 8:41 pm #686588For Question 1 Budgeting did any of you recommend ZBB or rolling budget?
June 8, 2023 at 11:13 pm #686597I recommended Rolling budgeting. Personally I felt the scenarios had too much text.
June 9, 2023 at 1:38 pm #686648Hello, why do we all have different questions in APM exam? It is not the same for everybody?
Thank you. Good luck with passing the exam.June 9, 2023 at 2:53 pm #686655Yes Zbb for the new product and rolling budget for the other one
June 11, 2023 at 6:54 pm #686806I had the variant with the large variance analysis which to me felt to be way off what this paper is supposed to be about. The rest of the paper Q2 Joint ventures and strategic alliances was ok and Q3 on IT ethics was ok, but no way you can lose 18 marks (variances) plus professional marks and pass. I have raised my concerns with ACCA, something I have never considered before as there seems to have been a really massive discrepancy in the level of difficulty between the variants this time.
