I wanted to know what the majority of people’s job titles are. My current job title is Finance Assistant and I have only ever had this title or Accounts Assistant.
I am due for a review at work and was wondering if I could gain a more authoritative title than this or if there is a title for the next level up the hierarchy?

    Any guidance will be appreciated.

    Thanks

I think having a title that suggests greater responsibility can help. Assistant suggests you have never had to hold full responsibility for your area. Having said that, employers will look past titles and at your actual experience to get a true feel for your ability

This is what I am after. I quite clearly hold full responsibility for my area as I am the only one doing all of the duties. My employer is not concerned about my job title it is for my benefit. I would like my internal colleagues i.e. from other teams and external contacts to know that I have authority/some kind of importance. It would also give me a sense of achievement.

My question is what job title ‘suggests greater responsibility’ as you have put?

Stand alone titles suggest greater authority, Financial accountant, management accountant, financial controller etc.. dropping the assistant part of the title suggests sole responsibility

Do you work for a larger firm, or a smaller one? Quite often the reason why larger firms give ‘assistant’ titles is becasue the breadth of the roles are not enough in terms of overall duties to warrant a full ‘accountant’ title, its usually a volume game, larger firms need staff to deal with high volumes of the same kind of work, where in a SME, the volumes are smaller, but duties are wider

Years ago, i worked for a multinational. Within the accounting team there were about 15 assistant accountants, all doing part of what i would call a financial accountants job. the individuals would be responsible for certain journals at month end, but not all, and others would complete the reporting. No one saw the end to end process, just bits of it. In a smaller firm, this would only be part of the financial accountants duty, alongside everyhting else that goes on

In our Finance Department it is myself and the Financial Controller/Manager above me.
I do all of the day-to-day duties and reconciliations. There is a parent company with subsidiary/sister companies and there are the equivalent of our company in two other countries so I am involved in a lot of intercompany work as well.

I am literally one step away from the end to end process and I have asked to get involved in this. I want to do Management Accounts. My job role is under review and I will be receiving a new job spec. This is partly due to the extra duties that I have already taken on since April.
