In most exam technique related webinars and online tuitions many advise that in cases of complex calculations that would take longer time, it would be better to invent or assume a number and then give explanations or interpreataions on that number …then if the interpretaion or evalauation seems logical, students will score from that.
my worry is if the actual number (final figure) may be a positive NPV/EVA while students invent a negetive NPV/EVA…will that still be ok as long as explanations are well?

I would never advise to invent without some attempt at calculating it.
If you don’t get to an answer and part of the question depends on discussing the answer, then try to hedge your bets. Eg do this if the NPV or EVA is positive, do something else if they are negative.
