Hi Gromit,
Please can you help me to expand my knowledge on intranets and extranets and in particular who can access them or not.
In regards to the extranet, I can see why suppliers would be granted access to the intranet e.g a company that wanted a particular good delivered quickly and efficiently could give the supplier access which could provide this and also keep any communication/ information between the two parties confidential. However, please could you advise on why the company would want to grant access to its consumers and its business customers (if possible please could you provide examples)? Don’t know if I’m getting confused, by when we (consumers or business customers) use a password to get into EBay, for example, that s not getting into their intranet is it?
Many thanksDecember 22, 2014 at 4:39 pm #221416Intranets are purely internal.
An extranet is when your computer system is given access to ,say, a supplier’s system so that as you say, orders can be placed efficiently. Sometimes suppliers are given access to their customers’ systems so that they know when to despatch goods without having to wait on an order. When this access is given, the intranet becomes an extranet. Extranets are used for business-to business applications.
For example, many supermarkets ask their suppliers to monitor inventory at the supermarkets so that goods are replenished promptly.
When you access Ebay of Amazon through their websites you do get access to their computer systems, but that is not normally termed an extranet. You are not gaining access to their intranet either, just to a very specific set of web pages.
