Bear with me… This is ACCA related.

Has anyone heard the ICAEW “find a chartered accountant” radio advert?

I heard it on Absolute Radio today and to me it implies the only chartered accountants is ICAEW which isn’t true. As a recent (and proud) affiliate I’m a bit upset by this.

I was wondering if anyone else had heard this advert recently and whether it’s just me taking it a bit personally.

I get that it’s just advertising their brand but it shouldn’t be misleading to say that their brand is the only one that is chartered and can do that job. But want other opinions before I go on a crusade 😉

I couldn’t agree more. There is always going to be a certain amount of snobbery, especially from the likes of ICAEW’ers, which thankfully seems to be less nowadays. In the eyes of the law (UK), ACCA/ICAEW/CIMA/CIPFA all have chartered status.

Anyway, us ACCAs get an extra ‘C’ and can call ourselves Chartered Certified Accountants.

To pass 14 very hard/masters level ACCA exams is a massive achievement!

Yeah. And I rang ACCA up for clarity on the chartered thing and they said they prefer for you to say chartered certified just to ensure it’s clear what route was taken but as long as you put ACCA after your statement you can just say chartered.

She also said ACCA are undertaking advertising to make people aware of their brand, but dunno what that is.

I’m sat listening for the advert breaks now so I can see if I can hear it again before I hit send on a quick email to the advertising standards agency 😉

Unfortunately, there is still a belief held by a number of people in business that Chartered Accountants are in some way better qualified or legally entitled to do work which Chartered Certified Accountants are not legally entitled to carry out.I think more needs to be done to dispel this myth.Maybe ACCA Should carry out their own marketing campaign pointing out the equivalency of Chartered Certified Accountant with Chartered Accountants.
