May 26, 2018 at 7:56 am #454019Motivation, in general, is an area with many theories and little convincing epiricism. It is anyhow likely to vary from person to person: one size doesn’t fit all. You have probably observed a range of people with very different attitudes to money.
Maslow would say that basic wages are needed to meet physiological needs, but could also help meet higher needs, like ego (eg, buy a flash car).
McGregor, saw money as both a hygiene factor (enough to live on and to make you feel fairly treated) and then a motivational factor (you might strive harder to get your bonus). You might expect that at very high levels of income the motivational effect wears off. Undoubtedly it does for some people who prefer to socialise rather than work more overtime. However, other people seem to want more and more money and will work to get it. Of course, money is a way of keeping score and a high salary might imply to some people that they are winners.
