Currently, I have started writing for p5 past exam; however, I find my writing too short and not related to points in scenario. When I started writing, I just could not know how to write, I want to relate to points in scenario, but I just feel blank of where to relate. Thus, how can I improve my writing?
June 2, 2018 at 8:21 am #455416I assume you have studied P3, where you might have found similar problems.
I think the key is planning: spend up to 10 minutes in a 25 mark question reading and planning. Note down keywords relating to the scenario and the requirements, arrange in a sensible order and use those as the basis of your paragraphs.
When you are explaining a point make sure you do so in enough detail. I sometimes tell students to imagine the examiner as a 16-year-old trainee, with little experience, and to whom everything has to be explained precisely and in detail. That gets your writing to a level where your explanations are forced to be longer, better and fuller: you really have to communicate your thoughts and points to the marker. Obviously, if you do not say something, you cannot get a mark, even if you know the point.
When you read model answers, you will see that they make many ‘ordinary’ points and relatively few obscure ones. People mainly fail because they don’t say the basic stuff.
June 13, 2018 at 12:37 pm #458608Thank you for your advice, Ken. I have the same problem. I went blank in Q1 of the June 2018 P5 exam. I will use your points from the above comment to improve my answers, hopefully in September I will be 4th time lucky.
For the record, I had the exact same problem with P3, took me 4 attempts to pass for the very same reason. Oh well, at least I learnt the theory so well that even if I wake up in the middle of the night, I know most of the topics inside and out. 😀
June 13, 2018 at 2:47 pm #458616I can’t think of anything worse than waking up in the middle of the night and seeing in you mind the name ‘Porter’!
